Seeing how the mark owners are the brightest in the lvc, i figgured id post my question here. I got an 86 Monte Carlo...305 h/o, and iv been working on getting it fixed up all happynice, but theres one thing that is beyond my knowledge. When i have the car in neutral or park, and im revin, when i get to the top of the tach it sounds like someone threw rocks or gravel into the motor....what could that be? Any guess or insights would be appriciated. Thanks again.

This reminds me of the man who went to the doctor and said, "Doc, it hurts when I do this with my neck." The doctor replied, "Don't do that."

No load rattling, would be excessive play in connecting rod bearings or wrist pins.

Other considerations: (depending on how big those rocks are)
Timing Chain slapping around
Hyd lifters shot
Water pump bearings
Alternator bearings
Std Trans, Clutch springs

Can you determine the noise origin, weather it's engine internal, external, heads, bell housing, etc. using a listening device ?

Revving a engine to redline in park or nuetral is not a good idea, the engine has no load on it, if you have been doing this alot she ain't gonna last. :slam

Well then, your at the mercy of a shop mechanic I'm afraid...

Many factors could have attributed to the condition, but the exact diagnosis will require some basic skills. If it's rod bearings it could go on knocking forever if you baby it however (again if) loose rods will leak tons of oil and starve oil circulation to the rest of the engine and eventually cause seizure somewhere else. If the rod caps loosen or sieze you will throw a rod, break a piston, bend some valves, crack your block, and practice your hitchiking skills.

It really depends on where (whats making noise) the noise is coming from. Could be a $15 timing chain.

You'd be wise to have someone in the know have a listen ASAP to avoid some very expensive repairs sometime soon.

well thanks very much. It is in the shop now, so ill have them check that out too.

I have heard rattling heat shields make that sound before. However i don't think this is it.

id say you might have better help here if it was a lincoln LOL
