Give this guy your bad Gen 1 lights

Or you can just call Certifit and have them done by their China guys too. This can be done by anyone but you need the volume.

There's supposedly a place in Montreal that rebuilds headlamps. I know a scrap dealer who buys used headlamps and sells them to another guy, who sends them there. He said he would look into it for me. It is kinda like a "I know this guy who knows a guy who...." deal, but if I find any info, I will pass it on.

Quite so, but this guy appears to be willing to do all of the leg work, and all you have to do is send him your trash. :D

What kind of a turn around does this guy have? I mean, unless you have an extra set of headlamps laying around, how long would you have to go without headlamps in your car? I really only want a new clear front for mine because I am retrofitting some projectors in mine, but the problem is the front portion that the light shines thru. I have tried several different things, but nothing had panned out as of yet. Everything I have tried has worked temporarily, but failed later.....like the cold weather cracking the lexan that I used for a new front housing.

If I can get a turn around time I might be interested. I have an extra set of housings, but the only bad thing is I already have them taken apart. I will see if I can find another set and send them to him.

i live in montreal, do you have any more information?

I have no more information than what is posted in that thread. You might want to ask him. Being strictly a Gen 2 owner, I do not have this problem, but for those who do, I thought this might be a help, since all other solutions I have seen in the past appear to have dissolved.

I have an extra set of head lamps laying around. So I'd be interested.

In reading the thread what I feel stunk was how members of LOD were telling him to charge even more than he originally offered. If he could do it for under $100 per lamp for members it would be great.

I'll see what I can do. I have called every aftermarket supplier around looking for headlamps...I talked to body shops that I deal with asked them for ideas, found nothing.

 :(

Nobody does anything for little or no profit and continues to do business. Ask Geno, he certainly has had his share of marketing lessons with these cars.

At this point, pricing is simply pure speculation. FYI - and for those who don't bother reading links - when he requested comments on his suggested price of $125 per set, this was MY reply...

FWIW, new lenses retail for over $500 and wholesale cost is about $360. Now in my marketing opinion, a 'generic'(a.k.a. reproduction) item should be able to be had for less than 1/2 wholesale. That puts the mark at $180 per set. Given the alternatives, I think it would sell.

It's called Capitalism in a free market society. If this were some Stalinist state, we'd all be driving primer black Yugos with government rationed parts.

I'm that guy....

Hey all....

I'm "that guy". I'm in communication with a small Chinese headlamp manufacturer and we're exploring partnering to produce replacement lamp bodies for the Mark VIII with eventual expansion into other vehicles that currently aren't popular enough to warrant attention from the bigger headlamp crash parts suppliers.

I need a pair to send to china to allow their engineers to determine the best methods and estimate setup and tooling costs. I'm not going to be able to give them back. I'll cheerfully paypal shipping costs - I just hate to waste $50 or so for a faded pair from a junkyard.

I broker parts all around the country and the frustration is intense when you realize you need $500 lamps on a $3500 car. The problem is the curing of the original lexan, so the odds of finding an acceptable used pair in a recycling yard are getting worse every year.

I promise I'll do everything to return the favor - including passing on a set of our test lamps at cost (or perhaps even free) once we get to that point. Also, I'm a parts broker and know where 4000 of these cars are located in wrecking yards - let me know if you need a component.

Our goal isn't to make them internally identical, but to replicate the appearance and fit. We'll use the most common denominator method to keep costs down. I think there is a market for reproduction, inexpensive restoration parts for these cars - and am also seeking a source for the soft touch interior paint that we can test as a "duplicolor" spray bomb product.

No way there won't be thousands of these cars still on the road in 15 years - they are too seductive. Please - if you've got a bad pair on the shelf in your garage, sacrifice them for this good cause.

I don't have a set lying around, but I'm running the ghetto set-up right now. High beams pointing down. So I would definately be interested in a pair. How long before they come to market? I know thats a little premature, but I just had to ask. Also, ask them if they can make the reflector material a little more durable. I eagerly await their arrival.

I wish I had an extra set lying around, they'd be gone!

Maybe I can just take the ones out of my car right now, they don't do much good anyway. hahahahahahahahahahha

Please make this happen... :)

Hey All, Here's the status....

I'm exploring two possibilities:

1. Replacement headlights with OEM "look" but simplified internals to keep costs down - my pricing target is $75 - 90 per lamp. I'm hoping they will be similar enough to OEM that people won't have to order pairs.

2. A lens replacement kit, complete with internal reflector "cups" and adhesive, that will allow shops or DIY'rs to repair existing lamps.

I'm becoming pretty excited at the kit idea - Thinking that for $65 or so retail a person can get all the materials necessary to be safe and shiny.

Thoughts?

JH

I would just keep it simple and make a new housing, that deals with the oem faults. For $150 - $175 a pair, I would buy it.
