After getting their asses whipped by the blower 312 Fords---against their FI 283s---GM piously announced that they were no longer supporting racing, and called on the members of the US Mfgrs group to do likewise. Then they shipped parts and support out the back door like crazy. Ford actually backed away from racing during the '58 & '59 model years. But GMs activities were so obvious that for the '60 year Ford announced the 360 HP 352. Chev countered with the various 'W' engines in 348, 409 and finally 427 CID. and the race was on again. Mopar was, of course, in there with the 413, 426, and finally the 440 engines.
