This one should keep us all thinking.

This is a true story of something that happened just a few years ago at USC. There was a professor of philosophy there who was a deeply committed
atheist. His primary goal for one required class was to spend the entire semester to prove that God couldn't exist.

His students were always afraid to argue with him because of his impeccable logic. For twenty years, he had taught this class and no one had ever had the courage to go against him.

Sure, some had argued in class at times, but no one had ever really gone against him because of his reputation.

At the end of every semester on the last day, he would say to his class of 300 students,

"If there is anyone here who still believes in Jesus, stand up!"

In twenty years, no one had ever stood up. They knew what he was going to do next. He would say, "Because anyone who believes in God is a fool".

If God existed, he could stop this piece of chalk from hitting the ground and breaking. Such a simple task to prove that He is God, and yet He can't do it."

And every year, he would drop the chalk onto the tile floor of the classroom and it would shatter into a hundred pieces.

All of the students would do nothing but stop and stare.

Most of the students thought that God couldn't exist. Certainly, a number of Christians had slipped through, but for 20 years, they had been too afraid to stand up.

Well, a few years ago there was a freshman who happened to enroll. He was a Christian, and had heard the stories about his professor. He was required to take the class for his major, and he was afraid. But for three months that semester, he prayed every morning that he would have the courage to stand up no matter what the professor said, or what the class thought.

Nothing they said could ever shatter his faith...he hoped .

Finally, the day came. The professor said, "If there is anyone here who still believes in God, stand up!" The professor and the class of 300 people looked at him, shocked, as he stood up at the back of the classroom.

The professor shouted, "You FOOL!!! If God existed, he would keep this piece of chalk from breaking when it hit the ground!"

He proceeded to drop the chalk, but as he did, it slipped out of his fingers, off his shirt cuff, onto the pleat of his pants, down his leg, and off his shoe. As it hit the ground, it simply rolled away unbroken. The professor's jaw dropped as he stared at the chalk.

He looked up at the young man, and then ran out of the lecture hall.

The young man who had stood, proceeded to walk to the front of the room and shared his faith in Jesus for the next half hour. 300 students stayed and listened as he told of God's love for them and of His power through Jesus.

I'll drink to thet, Good for him. Glad he showed that guy wrong.:Beer

i know, i'll post things that i get from e-mails more often. i like this'n.

The theory that the chalk not breaking proves god's existence is about as foolish as saying the chalk breaking was because of the lack of god. They are both fools.

Who are you to say that, just because you don't believe it could happen. The Professor is not a fool and the other guy isn't either, miracles can happen such as the chalk not breaking, God works in Mysterious ways and that could have been one of them.

Wow this is rediculous. First of all there is no way no one would not stand up in the 20 yrs of him lecturing, most of college kids love to disprove and go against thier professors. Secondly why would a college professor run out of class when the chalk didn't brake more than likely he would have dropped it again. Third what kind of an idoit stay and listen to a fellow class mate talk about his faith, I would have been out of there and heading to my next class or to the bar since it was the last day of class. I had a professor just like this in college who make a scene if you came late or yawned in his class. The title of the class was Quest For Human Destiny where he would lecture on human creation and faith(he was a rabbi), he welcomed comments from class and anybody who tried to go against him. You would have more respect from him if you did comment and go against him, again professors love it when kids get into discussion. No professor would run out of lecture, rediculous. This story makes no sense.

Strange things happen and this could be one of them, as i posted before God works in Mysterious ways!!!!

I'm just saying that using the breaking of chalk as a basis for god's existence seems pretty redicuous to me. I would stand up in that class no matter what I believe, just to piss the professor off.

okay then, this was not the point of htis thread

Oh I know, I was just making a comment about the class. I think it is an interesting story though, and thanks for posting.

Nothing, I'm simply stating things like this do not happen in a college lecture. If you have attended a college lecture then you will know what I am talking about. Professors are too proud of themselves to let something bother them, when something happens they don't expect then they go about like nothing happened. I've had many professors have something go wrong in lecture and none of them left, they act as though nothing went wrong. And if the professor did leave the students would leave, no professor-no class the students would all leave. The last thing any student wants is to be in class every one is looking for an excuse not to attend. The events in this story do not add up and I'm talking about God or if the exsistence of God did not break the chalk. If you haven't been to a college lecture go check a couple out.

I have been in a few college lectures and have seen a few strange things happen, so who's to say that it couldn't happen. If some one has the power of God with them then anything can and will happen. As posted before God works in Mysterious ways!!!!

Hawk03, you argument is false. Have you been in every lecture there ever was and know without a doubt, about every Prof.’s mentality? Spirituality? How do you not know that one mans quest was to prove God wrong for his own lack of faith and spiritual blindness? Besides it’s a good story.

Thanks ekenkade for sharing.

Oh yeah, I heard a different ending where the Prof.’s challenge was about God’s power to knock him down. A student on the football team was passing by in the hall at the time and ran in to the lecture and tackled the Prof. Stating “ I heard your statement and God had sent me here.” That was loosely quoted as I had read that E-mail some time ago.

GO BIG TEN!!

thank you as well. i don't believe that hawk reads this the same way we do... i think you all know.

and, i hadn't read that one. this is thye only form of this story i've gotten

Read what my argument is. I am not talking about God or the spirituallity of the professor, I am talking about the actions of the students and professor. Every professor I know and that I have been in thier lectures wouldn't run out of a class when something unexpected happened. And maybe three people stayed to hear what the kid had to say but more left. I'm not saying none of this didn't happen but for a professor to run out of class because some one stood up and challenged him then the chalk didn't break, is crazy and the professor shouldn't have been teaching in the first place.

If my professor left, I would leave. If a student started talking in front of the class who was not assigned to no matter the subject of his speech I would leave also and I'm sure others would follow me out.

listen,
this is not about the actions of the people. there is a message in this that i don't believe you see. this is more about the mysterious ways in which god works
