June 26 (Bloomberg) -- Bush administration officials today pleaded for more time for the president's Iraq strategy to work as two Republican senators called for a change of course.

Senator Richard Lugar, the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator George Voinovich, another member of the panel, added new pressure on Bush by saying the current strategy isn't bringing results.
Lugar said in a Senate speech last night that ``the costs and risks of continuing down the current path outweigh the potential benefits that might be achieved.''
``Persisting indefinitely with the surge strategy will delay policy adjustments that have a better chance of protecting our vital interests over the long term,'' said Lugar, a six-term senator from Indiana.
He was followed today by Voinovich, a second-term senator from Ohio, who told reporters that while he didn't favor a ``precipitous'' withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, he backs the beginning of a redeployment ``so people know indeed we are disengaging.''
