Harbor Freight tool?

What is this for? To reset/open the calipers and put new pads on?

Overkill. I haven't done my brakes yet on my LS but I'm sure you don't need that tool set.

I got the red one from autozone and it works just fine. I paid 40 i think.

I purchased the first one. It worked well, a little expensive but you may need to use it on a different vehicle in the future. It was worth it in my opinion.

You don't NEED it, but you will surely WANT it and wish you had it. The first one (red) is what I have, and it is well worth it.

With it, it is very easy to screw the rear calipers in.

Without it, it takes a lot longer and you lose more skin.

+1
it one of those tools that you will be glad to own. Nearly every modern car now has integrated parking brakes and so I've used mine on many other cars as well...

sure you dont need it, but there is nothing wrong with spending a little money and having the right tools for the job

Cool. Just ordered a set too.

I have that first set. One Saturday I was replacing my rears, and literally got so frustrated with the little cube version you get from Pep Boys, that I tossed it into some woods. The little nubs could not grip into the piston face and kept slipping. It was impossible to turn it AND put pressure. (I've changed my rear pads about 3 times in the 8 years and 124k miles I've had the car. The amount of pressure required to turn and push that rear piston is never the exact same. Sometimes it turns and compresses easy, other times it takes a LOT of pressure and force. When it's the latter? YOu'll be SO glad you have the kit from HF or one like it.). A trip to Harbor Freight (4 miles away) just before they closed turned up the first set. Motor Trend/Car and Driver has a 20% off coupon in every issue every month, so used that. I've used the set above twice since then on different vehicles and it's a GREAT investment.

The red one in the first link will work for most Ford products, including the LS, but if you have a D3 (Five Hundred/Taurus/Freestyle/Flex) in your stable or future, you'll want the second kit--one of the rear calipers has to be screwed back in counter-clockwise (I think it's a Volvo thing). I don't remember which one; my dad ran into that problem when he was doing the rear brakes on my mom's Freestyle.

I compressed the rear pistons with a c clamp and a socket. That tool set would've saved a headache.
