Well, this '88 Mark7's odometer officially turned 250,000 miles a couple weeks ago. It's running fine and makes regular 1,000 mile trips to Vegas without the slightest whimper. So, the plan is to try Mississippi (around a 5K round trip) next month. I'm having it smogged and brake rotors turned and fluids and a new serpentine belt etc. before I go..

I have a couple AC traveling conveniences and am wondering if there's a better way to set things up..

I've run thick cable from the battery through the firewall's steering shaft (brake shaft? i forget) rubber grommet to an AC/DC inverter laying near my feet and it works OK, but it's not as clean as I'd like it to be.

I'd prefer to install the inverter out of sight, inside the dash or something like that, while keeping the cable as short as practical. The console is an option but that entails another few feet of cable (and added electrical resistance).

My question is about what lies behind the dashboard's facade..
The 700W inverter is smallish, about 7 x 4 x 2.5 inches. I've never removed the dash so I don't know if there's an empty space anywhere back there that might house the inverter. Anyone one know if there's maybe a good spot to put it?
As much as I've avoided any sort of mods, at this stage of the game I'd consider cutting a new hole in the dash or whatever.. Right now I just want some idea of what empty space might be in there.
