I have a 97 Mark VIII with headlight lenses that look like they are fogged over. They also have a kind of rough texture on the outside. The headlights work just fine they just don’t look so good. Any ideas on how I may be able to bring them back to clear and smooth again.

Thanks,
Mavrick

Supplies:

1500 sandpaper
2000 sandpaper
Water and a bucket
Plastic polish- preferably Meguire's Plasti-X

Soak the headlamp in plenty of water. Soak the sandpaper. Begin with the 1500 grit sandpaper and gently move in a back-and-fourth motion. Remember to keep drenching it with water as you go.

After a couple of minutes with the 1500, begin with the 2000 grit paper. After you're done wetsanding the lights, dry them off, and begin hand-buffing with the plastic polish. First go at it hard with your hands. Then, use an electric buffer to finish. Coat with a clear wax if you'd like...

I just wipe my lenses down with ATF every couple weeks, because I am too lazy to sand/polish them.

Make sure your lenses aren't screwed up on the inside as well. otherwise, you will just be wasting your time.

Your best bet is to use a good polishing compound designed specifically for plastic, and a high speed buffer with the lights removed from the car. You can use sandpaper as fine as you want and you will never get the lenses as clear.

I have used Flitz metal polish in the past, and on my Taurus' headlights and it really works on removing the yellow haze and dirt. it made my old headlights look new. give it a try. :)
