Header Questions.

This summer I will be finishing my exhaust and throwing on some Kooks midlength headers. The question is how long will it take for non coated headers to rust ? I know the Jet Hot coating is great, but I was thinking of wrapping the headers or doing a ceramic header coating on my own.
The main factor in this is price.
So would any of you's recommend buying the non-coated and wrapping them or giving them a ceramic coating.
What are the results/outcome if wrapping the headers ?

It's time for some power and completing the whole exhaust from headers to high flow cats will be done in the mid summer.
Either this or some 3.73's will come first. I want to stick with 3.73's because in the mear future I will be slapping either the twin-screw or Vortech on it, and don't want to keep changing them.
Also this car is a daily driver through every season, including winter.

Buy stainless steel headers and be done with it
 
kooks are the way to go noncoted there really is no point
 
Are the KOOKS Lincoln specific if so is there a difference between Gen1 or Gen2? The bolt directly in or is there hacking to be done?

Aight, Geno. Keep us informed. Do we have an estimated price ?

Obviously will be below what SCP wants, correct ?
 
ya they really are more like ART, than car parts. when I got mine I did not know weather to put them on my car or on the wall. they are hott

Did you install them yet ? If so, how do you like em ? I agree, they do look beautiful...

I just finished putting the kooks on my engine I am swapping. here are some pics. just 1 question for geno, I am sure about the drivers side header but the pass was a lil more difficult, is it possible to tighten down too tight? there was no way of getting a torque wrench in, I know the factory manifolds say 23-26 ft/lbs (or something like that) so I didn't go crazy with the bolts. do you think I will be ok or how tight should they be?

Just do them very tight, you should also throw on a film of high temp silicone on both sides of the gasket.

I see you used the origonal studs, mine came with 8 bolts for both sides(top). probally doesn't matter tho, and I had felpro gaskets and was told I shouldn't need any silicone with the install.

Hahahaha ! I read it about 10 times trying to figure that out.

I guess dertyclown loves the Kooks headers... I can't wait to get em.

I was thinking of doing the install with the help of a close buddy. but I think I'm just going to have my exhaust guy do em. I have to have them put on the new high flow cats as well, so I could leave the car there and have them take their time finishing the whole system as well as some new o2's.

I can't wait til I get the money, LOL. :Beer

So for those who have them, what type of performance improvements have you felt so far ? I do want the extra sound as well, hopefully doesn't sound too raspy. But it shouldnt since I will be running high flow cats, x pipe, and magnaflows.
 
Holy crap do you have to drop the whole subframe like the pics above to get them in? Those pics almost made me Yak!
 
no he drop it because he is putting in a new motor
 
there really not that bad on the install, a frend of mine helped me with it, he has a shop and let me use it. so not much help, but still it helped. I would not trust a shop to do it unless they charge you like $700. under that it is not worth there time, and are likley to just throw them in and not take there time. retorking the nuts was a pain in the a$$. it was hard work but it was fun at the same time.

I would not rap anything if you are using this as a driver as it will only promote our most dreaded enemy "Rust". This system can rust out a set of headers twice as fast as normal driven in our northern climates, as it retains mositure and the added salt road effects of winter. The two hundred bucks to get the Kooks headers coated is worth every penny for not only appearance but also in rust protection. Also if you look at all the twists and turns these pipes take you would never have the tubes covered evenly with the wrapping cloth.
 
Wrapping is the worst thing you can do on a daily driver. It gets wet as hell and holds the moisture in even worse. Promotes rust even faster.
 
Thanks a lot for the great information provided guys. I wasn't sure about the use of wrapping the headers, but I definently will not be doing it now. I'll see what Geno has to offer in a couple weeks... :Beer
