Help..Found this in oil pan and need to know where it came from...

Obviously, it was torn away from something in the engine but I don't know what. It is indented and smooth on one side and rough on the other. It appears the the rough side must have gotten caught in something because of the cut marks.

If it is aluminum it is casting flash that came off the heads or block. It isn't very big so I wouldn't worry about it if the engine was running good when you tore it down.

I'm wondering if the guides from the timing chain worn down and the chain ripped that metal off of a cover or something...has anyone seen that happen?
