I'm a new 97 Mark VIII owner... I was driving down the highway when it died. It would crank but wouldn't start. It seems like it could be the fuel pump so I sprayed soom starting fuild in the top end and tried to fire it up but no go on that. So I took a spark plug out and I didn't see any spark coming from it. I went to AutoZone and rented a computer and it wouldn't link up? I'm thinking my next move should be to pull the ECM and have it checked. Plz help with any insight or direction. Also if it is the computer can it be reprogramed or does it have to be replaced???

Thank you,

Sincerely.

To be clear, it just died WHILE driving down the road. At what speed. Any other circumstances; ie, new mods, chip, tuneup, etc.

Just an idea,my code reader requires that the car be running to pull codes :Bang

You're probably lucky it didn't fire up.

The '97 is EEC-V and out of my league, but I'd bet an ignition issue of some sort. Any spark with that starting fluid could've been interesting.

I would un-plug the crank position sensor, then plug it back in, and give it a try. I haven't heard of one failing "at speed", but if it came un-plugged, you'll discover that while under there.

it is the plug located next to the crank pulley, passenger side, between the crank and the A/C compressor. Not easy to swap the part, but easy to reach to un-plug.

also, check the cam position sensor. it is harder to get to. it is located between the water pump, and the power steering resevoir.

Just checking those two parts might show some loose connections, or bad wires.

My car had a problem like that but it was a 97 Continental and it was just for a couple of days. Did you check the fuel line?
