Hollow out clogged cats vs. Replacing them

Has anyone attempted to do this? If so, could you explain your results.

Also, anyone out there have a plain, custom bent pipe replacing the cats? Results?
 
I've thought about removing cats if they ever fail (no inspections in MN), but I doubt any shop around here would take that liability. Pretty hefty fine. So you may have to do it yourself.
 
Yeah you can do it yourself. I have open cats on mine. Only problem is you have to get O2 simulators for the two rear heaters to keep the CEL off. Unless you live were you don't have emission testing.
