how do you remove the crank pulley and keep the it from spinning

You need a harmonic Balancer puller. To lock the engine in place, you have to pull the t/c shield plate, and lock the Flexplate with a screwdriver, or prybar.

I used a puller and a large strap wrench.

Strap wrench would work also. The only times Iv'e pulled the balancer was with an engine out of the car.

I used an impact wrench and a puller.....worked like a charm. (had to remove the fan/shroud also) :Beer

IMHO, I would use an impact wrench only as a last resort.
