How to check?

I just picked up my tranny 42,000 for 400.00. How do I check it out? Like make sure its a 98. Just things like that I should look for.

when i got mine i searched around the web using the id tag on the side of the trans,i am sure ther might be other ways to tell,but those tags are numbered/lettered for each year and model.

tccoa has lots of members with experience with 4r70w trans.
