How to disassemble shift knob?

I am putting the woodgrain on my car and I can't figure out how to disassemble the shift nob.. i'm sure i can force it and get it off.. but i want to make sure before i break something.. can anyone tell me how?

slip the bottom black plastic ring down - you'll see from there.
