Some advice for all the cellphone-users out there:

To check the serial-number of your cellphone type
*#06# and write the displayed number down.

If your cellphone is stolen call the phone-producer
(e.g. Motorola) and tell them this number. They can
lock the cellphone down completely. So, after that no
thief can use it anymore, even if he/she changes the
SIM-card. And then you can call him "SUCKER"

It won't bring your cellphone back, but at least no
one else can use it. And if everybody shares this
information, it won't be worth steeling cellphones
anymore… For a better future

That code won't work on all cell phones, and IIRC, it's the service provider who does the locking, not the manufacturer.

It's easier to just pop the battery cover off, and write down the HEX ESN. Alternately, the service provider already hass all that info in their databse.

I have something similar on my Treo 650. I can remote lock my cell, remote wipe all the data, etc, with a simple text message.
