Hi.

i have a 2000 ls with the v6 motor.

i was driving today and ran the tach to the redline, which i seldom do, to pass on a country road.

when i got to a stop sign i noticed smoke billowing out from under the car. i had left a trail of transmission fluid and it was puddling under the car, i called AAA to get home.

the fluid seems to be pouring out where the motor and transmission are connected. my friend says its called the "Bell House"... i dunno, what could possibly be leaking so much fluid?
any ideas?

Thanks in advance

it has 165,000 miles.

Bad times. Either a pump seal or - this one is my expectation - cracked the converter. In either case the transmission needs to come out and, most likely, inspected/rebuilt by a transmission shop.

That just blows. It would be so hard to put $2000 into a 2000 V6 when in all likelihood, that same $2000 will buy another. I think this is why I sold my '02 V6 - it never failed me but the fear was there. I truly hope the new owner drives it another 100k trouble-free miles.

And AAMCO is not a transmission shop.

They fix horns right?

The new owner tells me the A/C Compressor needs to be replaced. I find that hard to believe as the Defrost still works perfectly, indicating that the A/C Compressor is stil removing moisture from inside the vehicle. And it was replaced with a working used Compressor just 4000 miles ago.

Way better to replace it before it fails. If it is leaking oil, then it does need to be fixed before it runs out. Otherwise, you will have to remove the dash to replace the expansion valve and flush the remains of the compressor out of everything.

fixed,

dropped tranny today. was not too difficult with 2 of us.
as we were disassembling the drive train we noticed that many bolts holding the trans to the motor were somewhat hand tight. when we got to the starter the upper bolt was half threaded. the cross member almost fell off the car.
when i pulled the torque converter out it was very pretty and painted bright blue. then i looked at the seal, it looked as if somebody had pushed it in with their thumbs only, it was no where near flush with the face of the pump. it was actually protruded about half of its width. i used a small flat screwdriver and barely touched the thing and it fell right out of the car. when i inspected the seal it was as good as the new seal i had purchased. but to er on the side of caution, we placed the brand new seal that we purchased on the shaft. we pressed it till it was about 1/8" depressed, or countersunk.. or what have you.

this car popped it's seal out to say, "HEY, SAFETY CHECK TIME!!!"
good thing it failed, or i might have failed to make it to the keyboard!

quick question, when i have done TC's in the past, i have had to seat multiple splines, Twist, push twist push...
this TC was eerily easy to seat. how many time should it seat?

Typically, it's seated when you can't get your fingers between the trans body and the torque converter. It won't seat against the trans body for obvious reasons but you shouldn't be able to get your fingers between them.

Good job,Gadget! Glad to hear you fixed it. Should be a transmission vent..... you can make sure it's clear. You've got me thinkin I better put both of mine on the hoist and check the bolts. don-ohio :)^)
