OK, I have a 89 lincoln mark 7. The ignition works normal except the starter wont even turn when i turn the key. Also i started the car by connecting the posts on the starter solenoid but the shifter is all messed up, it wont go into reverse and it seems the gears are all out of whack. I replaced the starter solenoid and still the same thing. I was thinking it is the neutral safety switch, what do you think? If it is can you give me tips on where it is and how to change it? Id really really really appreciate it. I am at a complete loss here.

Is the small signal wire connected to the third post of the start solenoid? It's probably also a good idea to replace the ignition switch.

when i replaced the starter solenoid i made sure all off the wires were connected and in good condition, i even got sandpaper and sanded the metal connecters to clean off any corrosion on them. i look at the ignition switch but it works totally fine except for starting. at one point it wasnt starting than i moved the shifpter around a little bit then she fired up.

1) The ignition switch should be replaced if there is any chance it is original. Period.

2) There are two big posts on the solenoid that you bolt everything to. However, there is a small signal wire as well that must be connected.

3) By saying that giggling the shifter remedied your issue, you are telling me that you already have found the issue. Time to replace the shifter.

4) If the transmission is acting up, stop driving the car or you'll kill it.
