I have an extraordinarily dumb question.

I bought my 91 Lincoln Continental over the summer, but only recently have begun really driving it. While I have no complaints (at all!) about the way it drives and handles, I do have a stupid question about an empty space under my hood.

On the left front part of the hood (right in front of the washer fluid fill tube) there is an empty bracket comprising of three mounts, with what appears to be an electric plug of some sort just dangling loose.

What went there?

At first I thought it was my AC as this spot is next to the serpentine belt until I realized the AC is buried underneath everything. So I have an empty spot, where something OBVIOUSLY is supopsed to go - but whatever it is is not affecting the performance of the car at all (as far as I can tell).

Soooo what is it for?

EDIT: My other guess was that it was for the overflow from the radiator, but I don't see why that would require an electrical connection...

Some pics for clarification...

First is the hood closed for reference to where I'm talking about, second is under the hood above the left headlight... you can see the bracket and the disconnected plug poking up doing, well... nothing.

well now.. it appears as though your conti has been converted to coils... that spot is where the air compressor/dryer assembly goes...

btw.. there is a cleaning/polishing procedure for those fogged/dingy headlights.. works wonders, takes about 30-45 mins per side if they are real bad

Yea, mine are pretty horrible. The car sat for a loooong time in the Maine mud.

I was wondering if it was something to do with the air ride (as mine is indeed now converted).

I'm just happy to know its nothing major thats going to pop up and bite me in the rear at some point in the future. :)

glad I clarified it for you.

feel free to ask questions about the 91 conti... I got one (parked right now due to lack of funds to repair rear air ride)... I love mine, wish it was running, as now I get to 'slide' into work and home with the cougar.... LOL

My first 'real' car that I fell in love with was an '80 cougar 4-door.

I paid $200 for it as a beater car after my '93 Tempo was wrecked and wound up falling in love with it.

That car was ugly as sin, but I couldn't kill it if I tried. I've driven nothing but Mercs (and now a Lincoln) ever since.

I had a '93 Temp aswell before I had my Conti. Sure right about not being able to kill those things.

yea.. my 92 cougar (actually the wifes, but she drives the 4x4 Jimmy in winter) is nearly indestructable... I actually like it a lot... have put over 100k on it in less than 4 yrs, and have had very little problems... minor maintainance, and head gaskets, and water pump... not bad in my opinion.... for a car with lots of use and miles
