...I used the term "Alvins" to describe you electronic gear-heads (Chip Monks?) Then I was noodling on something I need really bad....
Mercedes from 1991 up has had chronic problems with unrepairable electronic control modules for seats and top mechanisms on the SL convertible line.
Somebody could get VERY rich designing and building simple cheater boxes that mimics the original computers but does not send error messages and lock up the systems.
A smidge annoying to be driving a $25,000 used car with the top stuck in the up position forever....or down..... or listen to the top mechanism warning bell and watch the flashing light....or not be able to adjust the seats.....
Anybody wants to take a stab at noodling one of these boxes I'll sniff out a Benz contact for you in your area.
