While heading out to the University of Wisconsin Track meet in Stevens Point Wisconsin on Saturday ....Roads cleared from the snow a day before ... Right Lane Clear in fair winter driving condition worn clear of snow and ice from the friction of the traffic all night long. But the left lane was Ice Covered ... only an idiot would use it to pass above the posted speed limit, or even at speeds over 35 mph ...
And wouldn't you know ... some idiot with his 3 kids and wife heading to Madison Wisconsin (I know this from the accident report) in a Mini-Van tried to pass our Bus in the Ice Lane ... Only one lane was clear of snow and ice (and we were in it) ... but this idiot had to pass our Coach Bus (which was safely traveling at 65 mph).
... Well the idiot lost control spun out hit our bus and almost killed his family ... (and a Certain Dubuque Iowa moron use to tell me about Wisconsin drivers) The idiot driving the mini-van was from Iowa ... OMG
... Broke the hub cover of the bus. So we sent one bus on to the meet with as many early event athletes as we could fit on the bus, while the other bus and about 50 athletes had to wait for a repair and the accident report to be filed. Officer said if he could have written a ticket for stupid this guy would have gotten it. Guy was lucky that our bus sent him to the ditch or he would have spun in front of the other bus and been hit by it.
Guy was about 30 min from Madison ... would not have saved any substantial time by just traveling safely behind the bus. It wasn't hidden ice either .. the lane was covered with a nice glare from the sun on it. We were not traveling below the speed limit in our nice ice free lane. He became 3 hours late instead of 5 or less minutes.
Lucky nobody was hurt ... took us 3 hours to get back on the road and and head 2.5 hours on to the meet. Lucky for the remaining 50 athletes The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point held up the meet for the Athletes we had on our bus (They were all in later events) ... everyone got to compete.
Moral of the the story ... guys don't be an idiot ... the time you save by trying to get around a truck or bus in bad weather isn't worth your life or the life of who is in your car. And think about how much time you actually save. Usually only about 5 min or less. You life is worth more.
