My mileage is rather poor city about 12-13 as well as irregular idle. It is fairly smooth at times but sometimes lopes a bit. It sometimes idles at 6-7 hundred rpms other times at 1000 to 1100 even after up to normal temp. Either in gear or in N or P this occurs. I have heard this could be either the iac or I read of a problem with the crank position sensor covering 96-97. The car has aprox 97,000 miles on it.

you could have a vaccum leak. If fits all the symptoms. Any CEL?

Yeah IAC possibly but I don't think that would affect mpg. If I'm not mistaken if the crank. position sensor is not working the car won't even crank. When was the last time a tune up was done including fuel filter?

Plugs and wires done within 1 year and under 10,000 miles. I'd have to check on the fuel filter though, that I can't remenber. No code is being thrown, but not having the iac plugged in has no effect on the idle. I've run seafoam through the engine as well as it is now in the tank.

gotcha. Def. change teh fuel filter. Its' only 8-9 bucks and not hard to do so there's no reason not too. Honestly, 90,000-100,000 miles is teh time to start replacing oxygen sensors. I wouldn't immediately jump to that but just be ready. Also, check air filter, clean or replace that IAC def., clean the MAF sensor wires (let me know if you don't know how), change PCV valve. These are all cheap and honestly need to be done anyways. I can tell you these little things probably aren't the problem. Ususally big stuff like misses and 02 sensors and fuel filter causes the mileage to go down that low. How is the power?

I'm still thinking vaccuum leak by the way. You need to test your vaccumm lines.

Just did the fuel filter tonight, it seems smoother and the power a bit better as well. I did the pcv about 3 months ago. I'll check the vac lines but even if they are bad I think the iac is shot anyways. But being almost 10 yrs old and 97k there are bound to be vac lines on their way out as well.
