A friend sent me this. If facts are facts, it has some merit. In fairness to GWB I'll leave this open to dispute.

THIS IS GOOD NO MATTER WHAT YOUR POLITICS

Worst president in history?

(The following appeared in the Durham, NC local paper as a
letter to the editor. Please forward to all on your list as this will put things in
perspective:)

Liberals claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war. They complain about his prosecution of it. One liberal recently claimed Bush was the worst president in U.S. history.

Let's clear up one point: President Bush didn't start the war on
terror. Try to remember, it was started by terrorists BEFORE 9/11.

Let's look at the "worst" president and mismanagement claims.

FDR led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman finished that war and started one in Korea. North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.

John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average! e of 5,800 per year.

Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions. Over 2,900 lives lost on 9/11.

In the two years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Lybia, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. We lost 600 soldiers, an average of 300 a year. Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist
attack at home.

Worst president in history? Come on!

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking,
but...

It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51 day operation.

We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for
less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing
records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our military is GREAT! PASS IT ON.

Your thoughts, please.

Barry

What would you like me to say Barry?

The Media is this country is biased and severely left leaning. I don't say that to start a fight. It is just a fact. And this fact creates an environment where both sides of an issue are not looked at fairly. It is this lack of fairness that creates division and mistrust, on both sides.

I truly believe this country is more conservative than liberal in terms of ideology. I believe it is somewhere around 70%/30%. If the media was more fair to the right, we would see a greater distance in public opinion. Not the 50-50 divide we have today.

And let's not give too much credit to the American voter. I think many are simply under-educated (or call it under-informed), at best - and the rest are misguided by what they see and read on TV and in the newspapers.

Where am I going with all this?

President Bush has not been a bad President. Certainly there are policies that one can disagree with. Nobody, I don't think anybody will always agree with the policies of a President, even the one's on the same side of the isle. This President has been villified more so than any President in history. I think it is time to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is tackling the future of civilization as we know it, and should be given a break, IMHO.

The next 4 years will demonstrate if we as a nation, and we as a world community, will be able to snuff out terrorism. It is a worldwide phenomenon that needs a worldwide solution, but it has to start somewhere. And once again the United States is leading the world in an attempt to make the world a better place.

I appreciate this post, Barry. I think a lot of those things cited in that letter have been disputed. Without going into details, I'll just say that we live in a different world now. Times have changed dramatically since the Vietnam War. The Republican and Democratic parties have changed as well. In fairness to Clinton, yes he could have gotten Osama, but only the most insightful could see the true danger he posed to the U.S., and really terrorism in general. We were living in a state of mind that it couldn't happen here. 9/11 changed all that.

I will tell you that personally what pushed me to defend Bush more and more adamantly starting earlier this year were all the "liar" accusations against Bush. When the facts just weren't bearing that out, it made me very upset that they kept it up in light of the evidence due to the internet buzz. It has gotten to an almost ludicrous point. I went from maybe a 49% chance of voting for the Democrat nominee at the beginning of the year to less than 10% because of the incessant, unjust attacks. I wish Bush could go into tonights debate without having to deal with hearing Kerry say that Bush "mislead" the country, as that is pure bunk and I think that deep down people know that but they won't admit it cause they hate him anyway. I also wish that Bush didn't have to attack Kerry, but realistically I know that won't happen because it works (much to my chagrin). I may take a shot at Kerry from time to time as anyone can read, but I leave most of the attacking to others. I focus more on Bush's defense rather than going after Kerry. And if we were to ever meet and become friends, Barry, and some jerk started calling you names unjustly, I'm the type of guy (much to my wife's disamy) that would make it my fight and you'd be pulling me off of the jerk.
