so, being tired of being slower than my brothers SHO, even with 4.10s, i removed my intake and imrc's for a little bit of cleaning. well turns out, they need a lot of cleaning. i can't believe the imrc's still moved. my egr was completely choked. wow.

so the imrc's are all clean, now how do i clean out the intake? that thing is full of twists and turns. no way my trusty toothbrush is gonna get in there.

how do i get the gunk out?

on searching: yep, when through 20 pages. none of them had "intake cleaning" in the title. a google search also revealed nothing of interest. just how to clean imrc's. which i did.

Chris. Did you use a walk through to remove the intake? Could I get a link? Was it hard? Had you done anything like it before?

If it is really that bad I would take it to a local shop to put thru their hot tank, then when I got it home wash it down again with hot soapy water, rinse, blow off and let dry.

Great time to replace your IAC and TPS sensors, and get your EGR turned off or blocked off and tube removed or sealed.

no walkthrough. just started unbolting everything i could find. hood, cowl, wipers, intake, fuel rail, egr tube, throttle body, iac, and so on. it is pretty involved, but i wouldn't call it hard.
i have had many 5.0 stang and truck intakes part. this was harder.

find a picture of an intake and you can see everything that will need to be unbolted.

that's what i'm thinking as well. hot tank it is.
motorcraft IAC and TPS will arrive later today! :D
i would cap the EGR, but don't i need a tune to compensate and turn off the CEL?

+1 :) I wish they'd get the hot tank machine running at work, lol...

Yeah you'll need a tune to turn it off.

I didn't on my '93 or my '96?

I have the '93 'turned off' now with the SCT PRP tune but the '96 only has a chip that was made before the EGR delete and it doesn't have any CEL with the EGR delete that was done with the Cobra manifolds.

I stand corrected.

Yeah cleaning that pipe-organ looking nightmare is FUN, ain't it?

When I had mine off, I soaked everything in a big tub of home-brew solvent... Pretty much straight lacquer thinner with a quart can of methylene chloride paint stripper for added dissolving action.

It worked pretty well. After several days, all the carbon build up on the IMRC's just rinsed off with a quick one-over with a scrub brush, but the intake itself was a little more work. I used a certain size flexible engine-cleaning brush that would bend up around the turns in the pipes quite a ways, but that gray coating on the exterior was a real job and a half to remove.

It turned out nice though. I even polished the tubes, and hit the whole thing with some clear. It looks GOOD...

Never thought about this but, this is a good way to get to the egr and everything else that you can either replace or clean.
