Hello everyone, I would like to know if anyone ever had a intake manifold go bad? if so where could I find one?
I had my 03 LS V8 at the dealer for a vacuum leak and they said it might need a new manifold I thought ok until they said it would be about $1600.00 for the part and $2400.00 total. I thought Damn must be made of gold or something.
Anyway I'm going to take it to my other mech and have him replace the manifold gaskets for a lot less. just want to be prepared in case the manifold really does need to be replaced.

Thanks
Waggs

It has happened.
A junkyard (especially the u-pull-in kind) would be a good place to get one.

I've built a few engines in my day, they were '60s and '70s sb chevys, bb chevys, 360 Dodge, never, ever, ever have I heard of an intake manifold "going bad". I've used cast iron (stock ) and aluminum, had my share of break downs, timing gear bolt through oil pan, rod through cylinder wall, twisted and cracked heads.
At $1600, I'd be suspect, I'd want to know exactly what the problem was and how it happened. If it is bad, one from a bone yard may be too.
What is the manifold made of plastic? Hell they make fighter aircraft out of plastic, they don't just go bad after 11 years.
I hate this, "make everything cheap, charge a lot of $$ for it, and when it breaks, throw it away and buy a new one." mentality.
Good luck Waggs,
Rick

It's plastic bonded to a little bit of metal (where it bolts to the engine). The failures that I have heard of are where the plastic joins the metal.

I will find out more this week, I located a couple used one if need be
