So, iraqis dont want freedom, eh? You say they are affraid, eh? Well, 72% of the entire population has turned out, and still counting...to put that into numbers that make more sense...in 04 barely 60% of the us population came out, and that was the BIGGEST voter turnout EVER in american history!

i believe it was abc news at like 530 this morning...either abc or cbs.

I don't think there was any person here that said Iraqis didn't want their freedom.....They do want their freedom...which is why they want the US to go home. So they can be free and un-occupied. I am hopeful that the relative smoothness of the election (all things considered) is at least the start of a return to a normal life for Iraquis. But we'll have to see how fractured the vote will be (110 candidates) and if the Iraquis can come to an agreement on who the Prime Minister will be....which could take some time..

I read the 72% figure on CNN. They said it came from an Iraqi election official. That would be something.

I'm quite suprised at how well it went. But as I've said before, I'm curious as to what's going to happen once we leave, and whether we don't come home, but end up somewhere else, doing the same thing.

From CNN.com

"The Independent Election Commission of Iraq clarified an earlier estimate of a 72 percent turnout in Sunday's election, saying that the "figures are only very rough, word-of-mouth estimates gathered informally from the field."

"It will take some time for the IECI to issue accurate figures on turnout," the statement said. "What is certainly the case is that turnout has exceeded expectations throughout the country."

I like the 119 or so canidites, and i must say if you were there wouldent you run to. that is so cool, I think when this is all over im moving out there, bring my car, good gas is so cheap out there.

Have you actually polled the Iraqis. How do you know what they want? And before you just start babbling about things, consider that this was an election to assemble a constitutional convention, not to elect anyone to office. I wish more people would get with the program so we could achieve our objective and get out of Iraq, leaving behind a far better country than before.

I haven't polled the Iraqis, but others there have. (and not news sources). And many are grateful for the US to be there, but they do want the US to go home. It only stands to reason that for years they had the spectre of Saddam hanging over their head, and now they have a foreign power in their land. Do you really blame them for wanting the US to go? If you knew anything, you'd know that most Middle Eastern countries are so against "occupation", it's hard for us to even understand. The US has merely an airbase in Saudi Arabia, and alot of the populance (including Bin Laden) has been infuriated by this "occupation". A base is hardly an occupation, but thats not the way they see it. Go read a few websites that aren't affiliated with any news source, and see for yourself. Grateful doesn't mean they want the US there permanently....

i definatly agree that they would want us out, hell anyone would want an occupation of their county ended, especially us. but that does not mean that they want us out at penalty of leaving an unstable government. They say "Yes, we want the US to go home, but not till we have our government in place." and all we ever hear is "Yes, we want the US to go home..."

I heard the greatest news story this morning on the way to work

Elections turned out well, very mild violence, only 36 dead by 9 suicide bombers during the Elections..... way to go Iraq...
