and dont know how to buy cars. Today I was a looking at a 1998 Mark with 108K miles. It was in decent shape. It needed some work though. All of the air bags were leaking, because that Mark was serously sinking. When they opened in the morning they would turn on the car it would air up and stay up most of the day. The upper and lower control arms were also rotted. So I was prepared to offer accordingly. This is one of those car lots that would screw you the moment they had a chance. The first thing they tried to get me to do was to fill out a credit app. I wasn't going for that. So I asked, "How much?" $8995, he said. I was in shock. So I asked him how much for cash price. He said $6995. Again I had an  espression on my face. He tried to sell me on the powerful V8 engine. and all that bull crap they try to dazzle you with. I finally got fed up, and told him I would give him $2700 for the car. Totally taking away all but $1200 profit for them. You see, they bought this car at auction for $1500. I had $3000 cash ready to do business. The sales guy told me had to wait for his bosses approval. I had time, so I wen't and had some lunch. Do you know when I got back, they were selling that car to some poor schmuck for $8995 financed for 72 months and $1500 down. This guy was getting totally screwed. He had no idea what he is in for. The sales guy was :dancefool because of the huge commission he just made. Who knows, we may see a new member on the site soon.

Like I said, It's Hell To Be Poor!!

I know the feeling GMAN. At least you knew enough to keep yourself from getting screwed.
Did you tell the guy who bought the car about this message board?

damn, damn, damn. Its times like that that i just want to grab salesmen by the throat and swing away.

I worked at the local high end new car dealer for 5 days. On the 5th day the training turned to trade in's. I was told for example if a retired couple comes in with a 2 year old Cartier Town Car they bought new and it has 12,000 miles on it offer them $6000 for it! If they get upset take them out to the lot and get them love and want that new car so bad they will do the deal. Needless to say I walked out never to return. In the local Auto Trader a few months ago I did see a 1995 Mark 8 with " CUSTOM AIR RIDE". There was a picture of the car and the front bags were all the way down. I bet some poor smuck bought it thinking it had a ton of money spent on it. I don't see how they can look at them selves in the mirror.

Poor don't mean stupid. I've had car dealers try to charge me extra for standard equipment, watch yourselves around these scum.

That's how buy here pay here places work, the down payment is usually what they paid for the car. They know most will be repoed, but they don't care and will sell them again.

maybe you should get into sales :)

I do sales and its always about the money

:) you wont be poor if you motivate your self to make more money.

What gets me is some of these places would rather sell to someone who is financing with somewhat bad credit than to sell to someone like me haggling on price.

Because they make much more money that way.

If someone is stupid enough to not do their homework on the car and pay that much they deserve to be ripped off...

I stopped by a local "Used Car" lot that had a 97 LSC (actually a base that someone put a painted grill on) but they insisted that it was an LSC. Chrome tail lamps (no LSC badge), chrome strips under the headlights, did not have true duel exhaust and regular seats - HELLO?!?! They wanted $9000 even though the sunroof was jambed, rear lamp didn't work and it needed upper control arms - bad, really bad. 109K on the odometer. I offered $3K and they laughed - they said they had $7K into it. It is now gone, so some sucker bought it.

Anyone just buy a black on black 97 with snowflakes on the pass side and chrome 10 spokes on the driver's side?
