James Caan Refuses to Be the Typical 'Hollywood Liberal'

Veteran actor James Caan let people in on a little secret last week. After 46 successful years among Hollywood’s most outspoken liberal stars, he’s speaking up about breaking the mold.

“I'm an ultra conservative,” he said at Moet & Chandon’s 6th Annual Hollyshorts Film Festival Opening Night Celebration in Los Angeles.
“I'm not a G** damn Hollywood liberal, I'm not,” he said, adding he only watches Fox News.

Caan, who was at the event promoting his involvement with the online platform Openfilm.com, also added that he doesn’t think Hollywood actors need to comment on every single political issue. When Pop Tarts questioned him on California courts deeming Proposition 8, which bans same sex marriage, “unconstitutional,” he preferred to keep his lips sealed.

"I don't want to comment on that. I'll let those other geniuses do that – all those actors who like to find a stage to push their agendas,” he said. “They don't have political science degrees... I certainly don't. I'll leave it to Sean Penn or Barbara Streisand to comment on that."

Ouch.

But, Caan, who starred in the cult mob classic “The Godfather,” had no qualms in expressing his opinion regarding homeland security’s progress in controlling the presence of gangs and the mafia across the United States.

"The mafia has been well cracked down on. In terms of National Security, terrorists are our biggest problem,” the 70-year-old said. “The mafia made money doing the same job the cities were doing – cloning bids, building buildings... They only kill each other, not that I'm condoning it."

Speaking of not condoning certain practices, Caan recently completed “Middle Men,” his second film with Luke Wilson – and although he has a “good relationship” with the younger actor, Wilson does do one thing that rubs him up the wrong way.

“Luke is a good guy. I just don't like him texting me. I told him call me, G** damn it, don't text me. When he texts me, I never answer,” Caan added with a smile.

And let's not forget lunatic bigoted ogre Mel Gibson.

You sure about that?

Well Mr Passion doesn't call himself a liberal and conservatives come to his defence.
Why does the right keep defending Mel Gibson?

Conservative blogger Doug Powers--who is guest blogging for Michelle Malkin-- attacked Mel Gibson's former agency for dropping Gibson as a client after audio surfaced allegedly of Gibson threatening his then-girlfriend in a racist, misogynist manner. Powers argued that Gibson was dropped simply "because he used the 'N-word' in an unhinged privately recorded rant," but that Gibson's former agency "continues to represent the likes of P. Diddy, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blight, Eminem, 50 Cent, and many more, who broadcast the same awful word to millions--daily, unabashedly and continually."

Powers defense of Gibson--who is allegedly heard on the recording telling his then-girlfriend that she deserves to "be raped by a pack of n***ers" because he felt she was dressing too provocatively--harkens back to conservatives' defense of Gibson following his 2006 arrest, in which Gibson made a litany of anti-Semitic and sexist remarks.

RadarOnline has posted audio, allegedly of Gibson, telling his then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva that she looked like "a Vegas bitch, a Vegas whore" and that when she went "out in public" she was "an embarrassment to me" because "you look like a :q:q:q:qing bitch on heat and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers, it will be your fault, alright?

Because you provoked it! You are provocatively dressed all the time with your fake boobs you feel you have to show off in tight outfits and tight pants and you can see your p**sy from behind." Gibson is also reportedly being investigated for allegations that he physically assaulted Grigorieva as she held their infant daughter. In other audio recordings, Grigorieva is reportedly heard saying, "what kind of man is that who would hit a woman when she is holding a child in her hands, hitting her twice in the face? What kind of man is that?" to which Gibson allegedly replied, "You know what--you f***ing deserved it." Gibson also reportedly threatened to kill Grigorieva "with a handgun at his estate."

Interesting to see who comes to defend and circle their wagons around Mel's outrageous behaviour.

As Media Matters noted, several conservatives were far from outraged about his DUI arrest:

•on MSNBC's Scarborough Country, William A. Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, said, "There's a lot of people who have made comments which are bigoted who are not necessarily bigots," adding that he is "concerned now about piling on." Of those who won't forgive Gibson, Donohue said: "Who gives a damn about those people?" Donohue then asked, "What kind of blood do they want out of this man?"

•On Fox News' Fox & Friends, radio host and regular Fox & Friends guest Erich "Mancow" Muller said, "I can't believe he is anti-Semitic. I can't believe The Passion of the Christ, they thought was anti-Semitic, because our hero was Jewish."

•In his August 2 column on National Review Online, John Derbyshire excused Gibson's comments because "[t]he guy was drunk, for heaven's sake. We all say and do dumb things when we are drunk." Derbyshire added: "As little as I care for Mel and his splatter-fest Brit-hating oeuvre, though, I care even less for the schoolmarmish, prissy, squealing, skirt-clutching, sissified, feminized, pansified, preening moral vanity of the vile and anti-human Political Correctness cult."

•A press release posted by the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND) asked ,"Where's the Compassion for Mel Gibson?" Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, founder and president of BOND and an occasional Fox News guest, was quoted in the release as saying: "I am sorry that Mel Gibson and his family are going through this difficult period. Gibson absolutely did the right thing by offering a heartfelt apology and asking for forgiveness from the Jewish community -- he's even asked to meet with Jewish leaders. To those who will not be satisfied until Gibson is destroyed -- I say 'shame on you. Where's your humanity?' "

In fairness Mel has said there's a crazy man in his head which along with his father's influence and boozing would explain alot.

"In fairness Mel has said there's a crazy man in his head which along with his father's influence and boozing would explain a lot."

Let's see if I have this straight. About forty lines of 'allegedly' and 'reportedly' and then one sentence 'In fairness...' HMMMMM

The allegedly is only legal speak.
We all heard him being a menacing terrorizing ogre on those tapes like something straight out of central casting or the Shining.
I suppose you want to come to Mel's defence and/or make excuses for him.
Or perhaps secretly live vicariously through him.:p

The significant part of this story isn't that there are a handful of conservative leaning actors in Hollywood. It's how many are afraid to speak honestly about their political and social views for fear of genuine career backlisting.

John Voight has spoken about it candidly.
There's even a group called "Friends of Abe" that really keeps membership a secret for this reason.

Mel Gibson has some very traditional views, but he's not aligned with any political party.

Mel Gibson is the :q:q:q:q. He says what he thinks and I love him for it. As far as him beating Hos, thats not good(might not even be true). But if women don't want to be seen as whores should not wear a whores uniform. When you need two hairdos wear a dress, your looking to get :q:q:q:qed.

Yet another mediamatters misrepresentation.

Talk about cherrypicking and straw man - reading Powers' 2 paragraph blog post about Gibson, he's not so much defending him as he is pointing out hypocrisy on the agency's part. He does not ONE TIME defend Gibson's actions.

Even Whoopi Goldberg said she doesn't think Gibson is racist and she said repeatedly that she knows him personally. She's far from conservative.

I'm still waiting for you to demonstrate that Gibson is a conservative.

Millican fails; you fail.

Mel Gibson is considered conservative because he's an openly religious Christian. Other than that, we know very little of this guy's politics, but I doubt that he's a liberal.

Religious views don't automatically equate to political views. However, it is worth noting that Liberalism is typically hostile to religion; specifically Christianity.

Based on what? Nothing but pure speculation.
