Just got rear ended. I'm waiting for police to come but I offered the driver to give me 500 bucks to no go thru insurance. My bumper is totalled the large pice of trim that goes from wheel to wheel as well as the smaller piece that meets the bottom of the trunk. My question is will 500 cover my damage or should I just go through insurance. The only good thing about this is that my bumper already had a nice nick in it. Any quick answer would be appreciated because I'm still here waiting for police. Ughhh.

yes picture!
but prolly not if you need a new one entirely/tail lightassembly or liscence plate surround is damaged..considering paiting on top of parts cost ect....more like 1,000 as a guess...these cars are 40k new

yeah if its pretty bad and broke the parts listed above 500 wont cover the damage

I'd go through insurance. After all, it will be his insurance that picks up the tab.

when I got rear ended, my bumper did not look destroyed. It came out close to 2k/ Maybe it was 1500-2000, dont really remember, but in that neighborhood. It looks minor, but it adds up quickly. They replaced quite a few things in there, probably to get more out of the insurance though. If your crash was more than dang a little ding, I would not take 500 for damage. Just painting a bumper will run about 300-400, depending on your paint if it's tri-coat or not.

Thats crazy  whoever hit you had some serious damage to there car.

We exchanged info. I'm gonna go tomorrow to fill out an accident report. Get an estimate, give her the choice to pay. If she can get me the cash by this week I'll let her. If not insurance it is.

Insurance no doubt. With the LS you want insurance almost every time because this car is expensive!!!

Definitely insurance. That's going to be more than 500, easy. The last thing you want to do is end up paying when someone hit you and let them off easy

^+1
agree totally...i try n take care of my care to the greatest of my ability and if someone else is responsible for ruining that. they are responsible for gettin it back that way imo.

your being real nice for just having your bumper destroyed. How old is this "her" you mention?? ;)

Okay, but if I get an estimate and they gimme the cash is there really a difference? After all is said and done I won't have to get that new bumper I already wanted to because it was cracked when I bought it. So that's a good thing.

MAN that sucks, but could've been alot worse, today wasn't a good day for the LS cause i saw this on the way home,

what happens when the estimate is off and off by a lot, it could easily double or triple in price, once it has been taken apart and fully inspected. you never know.

Use her insurance. That much damage on the outside means damage to the crush pieces underneath. Additionally, if you use the body shop that your insurance company recommends you generally get a lifetime warranty o their work. I got rear-ended a couple of weeks ago by a Suburban and his only damage was a bent license plate. My damage was superficial and repairable, but still cost ~$700. Turns out his insurance was really his mother's and wasn't in force when he hit me; good thing I have uninsured motorist coverage. From what I understand, the kid not having insurance will cost him his license. I guess that doesn't mean much here in the land of illegal alien drivers.......

It cost me $400 just to respray my bumper with no damage.

Thats easily $1000 or more worth of damage. Bumper cover, paint, and the stuff behind it.

That sucks so much ! I feel for ya. This cost about 8k so if I were you I'd go through insurance. $500 might pay for the little trim piece on the bumper.

I saw your situation short that was a doozy.. She's all fixed like new? 100%?

Update on my situation. I had to call this girl's insurance. I got a quick estimate and it's definately over 500. Good thing I never took the cash. So far I'm lucking out with her insurance.. I have no collision, gotta change that. It's just not worth the risk. They have to get their side of the story and and set me up with an appointment with an adjuster. Fingers crossed.
