to shine up and noticed inside the tube where the hose from the valve cover goes in I had a thick oily sludge. Is this normal? or should I be concerned? What causes this? Oh I have the V8. TIA

I've got that too........not to worried about it. I was also told by a mechanic not to worry about it.

Think about it, hose from the valve cover carries fresh air from the intake to the engine internals (part of the PCV system). Engine vacuum normall pulls the fumes from the engine internals out the other side through the PCV valve into the intake manifold and burns those fumes. On hard acceleration, engine vacuum is low, so the flow of fumes may go in reverse (if the PCV valve isn't working properly) carring the oil-saturated fumes into the intake tube.

Oily sludge in the intake tube isn't exactly abnormal, but I'd check or replace the PCV valve.

what is the PCV valve exactly can you show me a picture please

Johnny is right on with the explaination of how the oil get there.

V8 doesn't have a PCV valve - only the V6
