Well I met up with Jason (02LSE96LSC91SE84TC) at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove today and both took our vehicles down the 1/4 mile for some fun.

I decided to take the Kenne Bell Explorer back out to the track today. I got three new personal bests this time around. Better ET, better 60' and better MPH.

Here are my best ET and 60' timeslip numbers:

R/T.......0.220
60'........1.961
330.......5.637
1/8.......8.722
MPH.....80.87
1000.....11.368
1/4.......13.639
MPH......98.93

As you can see I stuck the launch pretty decently this time, but I still could only launch at 1/2 throttle because I was spinning bad otherwise. The rest of my times went up in smoke due to waaaay too much wheelspin! On one of those wheelspin runs is when I broke 100 MPH for my trap speed though. It feels good to hit triple digit MPH and sub 2 second 60' in the Explorer. It still has another .2 seconds in her once I can hook at full throttle.

Sorry no new vids on this one. I forgot the cam.

Jason ran a 15.3 while running into shifting issues with his LS tonight. Hell, he could have ran a 20 second 1/4 and people would have still drooled over how nice his car is! I am positive that once the shifting part is able to be nailed that he will turn a 15.1-15.2 no problem. With a little minor lightening, like taking the spare out and running with less gas in the tank he may just hit 15.0-15.1 if the conditions are right. After the Xcal2 tune he should be well into the 14's.

Overall pretty fun evening. Met some good people and made a few decent passes.

That was a good pass for your truck, wish I could of seen it, I think I was in the return lane when you ran it. I looked a little closer at my times when I got home. The 1st 15.3 was with a weak launch, the 2 other 15.3s were with good launches, but early 1-2 shifts(have to master the SST), so I'm confident with a good launch and proper shifting, 15.2/15.1 is a sure thing. The tune for 14.9 would make me happy. I wonder how much the 20s are a factor.
Thanks for the compliments on the ride. It may look good, but you Explorer is totally bad a**. And what you have in the works is crazy.

I see your car possibly pulling a 14.8 with the tune, better manipulation of the SST, and spare tire removed from trunk and less gas in the tank. ;)

Thanks for the props on the X bro. It was a damn good time hangin out with ya.

It's nice to hear that you guys had fun at the dragway... Jason, you have an 02 LSE, don't you? So the SST would start in second gear, wouldn't it be better to race in D5 or D4? So it would start from 1st gear..

I guess you might have started in D5 and then shifted to SST..

Yep, thats what he was doing. It was a pita though, because it wanted to shift to secdon when he switched to SST. Just had to get the timing down so when it did shift, it went at the right rpm.

I always found on my 03 that 1-2 and 2-3 shifts seemed much more precise in D5 than in sst. only liked sst for launch

Yep, Launch in D5, then scoot it over once off the line but WOT in 1st. My first run I left the ATrac on and let auto do its thing. The next 2 runs I used SST and it worked as planned, but I wasn't brake launching. We took a break and then I started brake launching, hit a 2.299 and 2.289 60s but then both times when I scooted the shifter over while WOT in 1st, it shifted into 2nd, still hit a pair of 15.3s with a early 1-2 shift. The only thing I think I did different is, because I was focusing more on the launch and was confortable with the SST, was I was scooting the shifter over later in 1st, high along in the rpm instead of right after launch, this may be the problem. I'll get her staightened out for next time. If I can hit a 15.1 with the 20s, I'll throw throw the stock wheels on to try to hit the 14.99 before I get the tuner. Thing is the Nitto 555s stick pretty good. Rob,I forgot to mention my RTs on my last 3 runs were I was more consentrated on launch were .019, .066, and .117.
Should also give Andy credit with his 1st time down the track 13.5 and a pair of 13.4s in his EVO. He had a few passes I didn't see, may of even had a better one.

The trick to using the SST to its potential is to command the shift at the right interval before you actually want the shift to occur.

For instance, I command the 1-2 shift at 6300 and it shifts at 6,600-6,700.

The 2-3 shift I command at 6,400 and it shifts at around 6,550 rpms.

Then I roll through the traps in 3rd gear at roughly 6,800 rpms.

When going from running D5 the entire 1/4 to shifting with SST in the 1/4 mile I shaved around .2 seconds off my ET. I am tuned a little different for SST though. I have a custom tune made just for the engine performance and SST shift mode. I left auto alone so I could still have smooth shifts during daily driving. Even untuned, when manipulated correctly SST should produce better times than D5 in a 03+ LS.

You can tell by the firmness of the shifts with the SST it would be likely better for ETs. My car will chirp the tires in SST 1-2 shifts, never did it in D5. Haven't done it alot, but the times I have it chirps them more than not. I don't think it will with the Nittos.

Nice Rocket!! I guess I'll have to stick to my Cobra to race you...I think my wife's Aviator is WAAAAAAY overmatched!! LOL

Your mph is impressive. It's hard to shove one of those bricks through the air like that.

Congrats on the ET's I wish my mom in her 04 4.6 Eddie Bauer let me put a charger in it...that would be sweet

Thanks for the props guys! When I felt it hook that one run I was pretty excited once I got to the end of the track, because I knew I had another personal best in the truck. I do admit I got a little lucky on that run because it hooked unusually well for such craaaaaaaap tires!

Yeah it seems we cannot get enough of the track. We are going back out there again this coming weekend. This time there will be no blue ovals for me! It is all Lincoln baby! ;)
