Keycodes not available?

I have only a single key with my wife's LS and today she locked it on the car. (I'm having a nice run between this and the windshield ) I call the Ford dealership to have a key made from my VIN. No go. My VIN "doesn't have keycodes available" - even though the dealer says they are supposed to have then for 10 years.

What's the deal with this?

That's to keep villains from doing exactly what you are doing. The dealer has to program the keys. Now if you had two keys to the car then you can program a third but that doesn't help you out in this case. The same thing is true for the key fob. The dealer has to program it as well.

Ken, I think he's talking about the codes used to CUT a key...not program it.

Check your owner's manual and see if the code card is in it. You should also be able to call the selling dealer and they should have it.

Ken is correct on the PATS programming. If you have two keys, you can do it. If not, the dealer has to (or anyone with a NGS tester) As to programming the fobs, dealer required on pre 03 models. 03 and later, you can do it.

Yes, that's correct. I needed one CUT to get in, then I could get it reprogrammed using the original I have and could see right through the window. We ended up forking over $40 for the towing service to come by and get them out. I'll have a new one by today - I can't image the trouble I'd have if I actually LOST the original key and the keycodes aren't somewhere in the manual - which they might be - I just couldn't get it with the doors locked yesterday.
