I was listening to NPR this morning and they mentioned that the Toyota Prius has had 30 reported incidents of stalling and I guess Toyota may possibly issue a recall.

Here is my question; I easily know 30 LS owners that have had the same problem but nothing of this nature ever took place. Is the disparity over quality that great between American and foriegn auto makers?

The Prius is the hybrid right? Maybe the issue had to do with the electrical aspects of it. I was having a discussion with someone the other day about gas prices and the rising popularity of these hybrids, and they brought up a good point about something. In many instances of these hybrids being involved in accidents, EMT's are hesitant to respond to the call. Why? well would you want to stick the jaws of life on to a wrecked electric conducting machine? Did NPR mention anything along these lines?

About the quality issue there are good cars and POS cars on both the foreign and domestic side. It just seems that when a car is crappy you hear a lot about it, but when a car is quality you hardly hear anything about it. But honestly when someone asks me to name a crappy car the first thing that comes into my mind is ford focus, and when someone asks me to name a quality car, the first thing that comes to my mind (other than Lincoln LS :L) is BMW. Personally, off the top of my head I can't think of too many foreign cars that I would put in the same class as the focus, but i'm sure that there are a lot of them.

I owned a focus for a short time and besides its lack of power I liked it and miss it. Payment was way better than the LS too bringing the question of trading in for something that well be lots cheaper in the long run. Been thinking about a Scion tC cause I test drove one before I got the LS and it was nice, had nice options. Just it was an auto so I said I'd think about it.

Sorry for getting off track.

They onl;y noted that 31 complaints of the vehicle stalling/shuting down and that they were making abig deal out of it. The shutdown issue I went through was ultimately resolved by replacing a computer, ya' can't get any more electrical than that :).

They did not mention anything about the emergency resuce issue but I have heard commentary on this issue before. I was not able to listed to the entire story so I do not know if they have built in any safe guards. I would like to know if gas from the batteries are a danger as well.

I have considered buying one as a replacement to my LS when the time comes. I have also considered the tC and they are very reasonable. Have not tested one yet. Seems like a very nice car and the price is very reasonable.

Two comments....one, the Hybrid vehicles may not be owned. They may be leased. Ford is going through a mess right now because the want all the Escape Hybrid's back, but the owner's want to buy them. Looks like they will sell them afterall.

Two, I don't know where you figure the focus is a POS. Quite honestly, the few I've been around have been outstanding vehicles. They are a world class car that has proven itself around the globe. I put one of my sons in one. Best car he has ever had.

focus=fucus=fungus....=ugly reliable car.... Should of had a better name!!!

I don't mean to offend you or anything. But my definition of a POS is a car that has a reputation for having lots of problems. Whenever I talk to any of my mechanic friends and mention the focus, the first thing they say is never buy a ford fucus because it is a pos. But hey, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

The focus gets rave reviews by the auto magazines...can't always trust them though. I think toyota pays them off thats why they are always rated one of the best

Talk to the right folks and you will get that about any car including our beloved LS.

I have owned 3 Toyotas over the years and just upgraded my wife to a Lexus. I can not say a single bad thing about them. The service is better than Mercedes and BMW and happens less frequent. I don't think that Toyota needs to pay off the auto magazines because their reputation speaks for itself.

Hybrid vehicles MAY be owned. Electric Only vehicles are typically leased. GM is the company that is having trouble getting all their EV1 cars back since the leasees love them and don't want them crushed.

Ford's Escape is so new on the market, just announced last year for sale sometime late this year I believe, that there is no issue with expired leases. Thinks there might also be an issue with some much older Ford all electrics but not sure, but definitely not Escape.

The Prius problem is that at speeds above 30mph including on the freeway, the car totally shuts down. In several instances they WILL NOT RESTART and need to be towed to the dealer for a restart, kind of like Microsoft Windows eh.

All gas vehicles including our LS will occasionally stall, computerized or not computerized. There are many different causes of a stall. The Prius problem is unique to computer controlled hybrids. I would guess it gets more press and concern because it is new "unknown" technology.

My question is why did Toyota respond so well to thier car shuting down compared to Lincoln. I know several people that encountered shutdown problems with their LS and yet Lincoln barely responds.
