I just adopted this pooch from the animal shelter. Anyone know what he might be? or mixed with? The shelter thought he was sheppard. He looks more like a very small akita to me but he is too small. He's about 45 pounds. Any ideas?? Also his eyes are light blue.

I agree with you on the Akita part.

I'm sure you realize this, but so many people also talk like one pure-bred dog mated with another pedigree Most of the time, on dog, with a mixed heritage, found another one, with a mixed heritage. The result, the best breed of dog in the world, the mutt.

Hard to say what you got there I'm no expert. But the mutt rocks. Mines a sheperd mix. Definately some lab maybe retrever. Best dog in the world. No leash, stays in the yard. Will only chase a rabbit to the edge of the yard and stops. People can walk by on the sidewalk and she won't move. Can hang out all day while I wash cars, also good company when I tip beers.

Here shes just hanging out.

I disagree with Akita. Unless it was shaved at the shelter or something, I'm pretty sure they should have a good bit more fur. Those ears definitely look Shepard, but I'm not sure about the rest of him. Does look like a good dog though.

Sheba Inu (small versions of the Akita) and Shepard or Retriever - maybe. Great looking dog. I have three lab rescues myself (6 total rescues over the years). Thanks for saving a dog's life!

I here ya, I got my first dog from the shelter back in 96, she was a pit bull. A very freindly dog and great with the kids. She had to be put down about 6 months ago. She just couldn't get around very well anymore.

Quite a few people have thought he was part pit bull?? I'm not too sure of this. Sheba Inu has also been metioned. He hasn't been shaved so maybe the akita is wrong? Where did he get the blue eyes from though? Husky maybe?

Anyways, I've only had him a few days now but he seems to be a very good dog. He has no bad habbits as of yet. He doesn't beg for food, he doesn't dig up my yard, and he seems quite happy. His name is Lucky. That's what the guy at the shelter called him so it just stuck. Hopefully he will have a long life.

A lot of dogs at the pound, it's sad to see because it's classified as a high kill shelter. Thanks for the input guys, lets see some of your pooches! 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC sounds like you have a good ol dog!

that is a pretty dog. i don't know the first thing about certain breeds of dogs though. heres the dog my dad and his wife have. she is a full bred in germany, german shepherd.

My wife worked at a vet clinic years ago and off the top of her head it looks like a Basenji mix. Maybe with Sheperd or perhaps even Pit Bull.

Post some more pics. Side profile.

Here's a few more pics of him. Someone else mentioned pit bull as well because of his jaw.

with that second pik it does look like he might have some pit in him and definately some sheperd.

I miss my pits. I had pits ever since I was like 10 and they were great dogs. Well, we had one that wasn't too good, but the other 3 I've had were great dogs. It sucks they get such bad attention but they are actually great dogs. I have a husky now, don't know what he's mixed with because we got him from the pound, but he's kinda tall and skinny for a husky, and not quite as fluffy. Props for saving the dog though. Here's mine.

I have never seen a german shepherd with such a long coat. Is she a long hair german shepherd or is she a totally different type then we are used to seeing here, you know the good ol K-9 police dog. She is very pretty, looks like a good protector as well.

Wow, he looks pretty big. I don't know if I would go in the yard with him? I have had several Pits as well and they have always been 100% terriffic with the kids and good watch dogs. I just had trouble with them chewing on pretty much anything laying around. Other than that Pits are great dogs!

I walked outside tonight and my new pooch must have gotten my cargo net from my Mark VIII off of the work bench, yep he chewed it all up! As soon as he saw me he ran and hid under my truck. I'm guessing that the previous owner may have whipped him for the same thing? I called him out and scratched his belly. I hope he doesn't stay too affraid.

Yeah the pit my mom currently has is a great dog but he is scared of a lot of things. If you have certain things in your hands, like a large stick, windex bottle(wierd) and other things, he runs away and hides. I'm sure the previous owners abused him. He's great though, and is a huge baby. He will cuddle up to you and just nudge your hands until you pet him, and if you stop he will nudge you more. The husky in the pic is like 75 lbs and he's pretty big, but is really nice. He's just annoying sometimes because he can get a bit excited and act like a fool.

Definatly has Pitt in him, heres my Pitt/Lab mix her name is Maya. Shes the best, shes good with my daughter and a great backyard protector. Shes very lovable and playfull. Shes the best.
