I have a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII with 180,000 miles on it. I have found a transmission from a 2000 Mustang GT to replace my original one with. I'll be doing this swap in my driveway, on jack stands, but I have some questions.

1. Is it necessary to replace the MLPS on the newer transmission?
2. I should I order a new TCC from the dealership, or simply reuse the old one?
3. Should the idle air control valve be replaced?
4. Will the speedometer gear need to be replaced, and which one would I need to buy? The car has had all stock gearing.

If those parts are replaced, do any of them need to be Motorcraft parts or can I buy them at NAPA?

5. Will the torque converter in the 2000 GT be the right size and function properly in the Mark VIII?

6. How tall will the jack stands need to be? I think I have 16" stands, I've seen 24" for sale, do they make a higher one?

7. If I intend to use a floor jack, instead of buying a "transmission jack" to install the unit, will I have no choice but to buy a transmission jack adapter?

8. Will a 28KGVW tranny cooler be a good choice in a vehicle that sometimes does some towing?

PM Ray (1wykdmk8) and get his phone number and keep it handy. He really knows his Mark VIII and will talk you through any problem as they arise.

You should have just enough room with Jack stands to drop the tranny. Do you have something good to lower the tranny with? I was able to do mine with a good trusted friend and a good car jack. Just need to keep it ballanced.

Napa makes good parts. Just don't go to Autozone! Good Luck!

the only one i can answer for ya is yeah ull need a new speedo gear. You have 3.08's and im pritty sure the 00gt is 3.27's

So, if I'm carefull, I won't have to get the transmission jack adapter, but I can just use a piece of wood and the regular floor jack?

And, does anyone know which speedometer gear to order?

That's what I did, but make sure you have someone you trust to help ballance the tranny as you lower it.

This project will not be as bad as you think. Make sure you spary down all the nuts and bolts at least a day before you start to take them off.

Also get a set of rusted bolt Retractors. They are sockets that work with your ratchet set they have a spiral grip inside and cut their way on to the nut. They will help make the job much easier, and no nut will give you a problem. They cost about $20 at a parts store or Sears. You may need to get a new nut after as they can rip a nut to shreads but they will take the nut off.

It's probably be a good idea to do the engine rear main seal at the same time, wouldn't it?

Do I need that special Ford tool to install it?

Are you talking about the seals on the tranny? If so it would work best to have the tool. I didn't but I was coached on how to do it with out using the tool (guy who did it many times before). You can get many of the special tools at Napa or other auto parts stores. (Don't go to Autozone).

might as well r+r the rear main unless the job is so much fun that you want to do it again later when it fails

You could just reuse the speedo gear from your previous trans.

I'm still not sure about this-

If I take a transmission from a Mustang, Thunderbird, Crown Vic, or Grand Marquis, do I need to replace the torque converter before installing it in the Mark VIII?

1. Is it necessary to replace the MLPS on the newer transmission?

YES!

2. I should I order a new TCC from the dealership, or simply reuse the old one?

I reused old one,if it fails..it only requires dropping the pan and unbolting it to replace.

3. Should the idle air control valve be replaced?

not sure why you are asking this one, please explain.

4. Will the speedometer gear need to be replaced, and which one would I need to buy? The car has had all stock gearing.

Yes,you need a 19 tooth

Can't say,i didnt replace a single part other than swap from my old trans.

5. Will the torque converter in the 2000 GT be the right size and function properly in the Mark VIII?

Yes

6. How tall will the jack stands need to be? I think I have 16" stands, I've seen 24" for sale, do they make a higher one?

24 is probably good,i only had 16"and wished i had higher.

7. If I intend to use a floor jack, instead of buying a "transmission jack" to install the unit, will I have no choice but to buy a transmission jack adapter?

No i used 2 floor jacks,my good one and a cheapo i bought for this operation.

8. Will a 28KGVW tranny cooler be a good choice in a vehicle that sometimes does some towing.

Dont have the experience to answer this one.

ps.dont forget to unbolt the dipstick tube.i almost did, LOL
