To the Folks at the Lincoln Division at Ford:
As you know ever since it was first introduced, the Lincoln Town Car quickly became an icon. Sadly the current plans for a new Town Car lack (if Lincoln plans to use the MkT, a crossover, as the ultimate in reasonable luxury). In fact this plan lacks a lot.
Permit me to suggest the following ideas:
Use the MkT as the basis for the new Town Car, but don't call it the MkT TC. Call it the MkTC or the Mk Town Car.
Now to the car itself. The Lincoln MkT has lots of good design ideas, but to turn it into the next Town Car let suggest five things.
1. Move the rear window forward to turn the car into a sedan (limo) (rather than an SUV) with a trunk lid. A suggestion for the back window is something on the order of the C concept's.
2. Extend the wheelbase by an inch or two. Install "jumper seats" (a la Series 75 Cadillacs of the 1950s), such that the Town Car could haul four folks (or five folks with a bench seat) in the rear compartment. If designed well, the jumper seats could also serve as foot rests when not in their upright positions.
3. Change the rear doors to the "suicide" type, instantly bringing to mind the Lincoln Continentals of the past and English luxury brands.
4. Make the windows behind the "C" pillars smaller (see current Rolls Royce models), but use the curve of the rear door window of the "C" concept.
5. Provide options for the rear compartment for whatever the buyer wants. Some ideas:
A. A set of dashboard instruments that might include a speedometer, a GPS, an entertainment system and heating and AC controls.
B. USB, 12 and 120 volt outlets plus a Wifi hot spot.
C. Picnic tables for iPads and printers (and Dijon mustard).
D. Reclining seat and seat backs w/ lower leg rests with heating and cooling.
E. A heated or cooled compartment for snacks.
As you know, customers want to use livery cars for two reasons: It makes them feel good and/or they are useful. Following my ideas would let you offer both.
Sincerely, Doug Archer
