I'm working on replacing my torque converter, and need to remove the starter motor.

The mechanic who installed my transmission really put those starter bolts on tight. I've rounded off the edge of one of the starter motor bolts, and there isn't much room up there for me to use my bolt-out tool. I'm frustrated now, and running out of time.

If I try to lower the transmission out with the starter motor still bolted on, will the bolt snap off or will the bolt stay intact and instead, break through the transmission casing?

You DO NOT want to just try to rip the tranny out with that bolt still in place. Your gonna rip a chunk of aluminum out of the bell housing and leave the bolt in place.

Your best bet (personal expierence here) is to remove the motor mount on the passenger side, and use a long extension with a 6 pt 10MM socket to remove it.

Thanks for taking time to respond, guys.

It was hell but I finally got that starter motor off. That bolt was a pain, but it came off after a little talk with my BernzOmatic. It aparently wasn't as badly rounded off as it had first appeared. I lost a socket in the process though. BTW, that was the lower bolt.

The upper bolt was one I ended up needing a friend's help with. I put together a few extensions, 2 universal joints, and a breaker bar and turned it from under the hood while my buddy held the socket on the bolt from underneath the car. Fortunately I didn't have to remove the motor mount, but without a second pair of hands, I probably would have had to. One thing's for sure...that's one bolt that won't be going back in come re-assembly time.

Aside from the starter motor, things have gone smoothly. The only other major hangup I've had is the top bellhousing bolt on the passenger side. I managed to get it off using two 13mm sockets and a 1/4" ratchet. I say 2 sockets because this is what happened to the first one...

...and that wasn't because of a propane torch. That thing really did not want to come out. In fact, it made several loud creaking noises when it finally started to break free.

'Still got a ways to go, but I think the worst of it is over.

Do yourself a favor and re install the bolt. They are there for a reason. On a side note.....

What brand of socket is that?
