Lock doors with engine running?

I'm afraid to try it.

Can I start the car, lock the doors and walk away? Then, upon returning, key in the code and enter into the car? Or is there some security feature that doesn't allow the doors to be locked if the engine is on and no one is in the car?
 
I've done it in my Mark VIII from time to time. It won't let you if you press the button on the door as you walk away. You have to use the 7/8-9/10 keycode trick that locks the doors.
 
I've done it in my Mark VIIs, the Mark VIII I had and the LS. Actually, with the LS I took the keyless entry remote and left the car running.

ah yes, that's what it was. I read in the manual something about not being able to lock the doors in certain situations. That must be it!

maybe one of these days I'll get up the balls to try it. If I ever think of it when I'm home I could use the spare set of keys. But, for whatever reason, it only comes to mind while I'm at work...

I though about that, too. But then what if there's some sensor or something that detects an open window and therefore allows it to work differently. I'll probably just take my key fob off and try it out. that'd be the simplest way right now.
 
Don't know about all that keypad stuff; I've got an '02, but I used to beat the highway with 5000 miles a month. My car was a mobile office; I had gadgets and laptops and cell phone and direction thingys all plugged in draining the battery. Whenever I pulled into a station or whatnot for food/gas/coffee in very cold weather, I'd keep the key and fob separate and just lock the car with the fob with the engine running. Obviously, you always want to stay in sight of the car, but this worked out great for me; plus it kept the car warm and toasty.

Also, for those who may not know, you can hold down the unlock button on the fob and lower all the windows and open the sunroof. I can't remember if it closes them when you hold the lock button; I don't think it does.
 
I lock and unlock my LS with the car running often with the key fob.

No the LS doesn't have an open window sensor.
 
Im in sales so i requires me to be in and out of my car for seconds to run into companies, i got sick of turning the car off and on, so eventually i just took the key fob off and locked it. never once had a problem or any error messages.

Why didn't you say this earlier?
 
yeh u can leave the car running, lock it either w/ the door or keypad and come back and use the keypad to get in
 
I ran a test last night in the driveway. With the car running I got out, locked the door and shut it. then I heard the locks open up. so I manually locked the doors and they stayed locked. then I used the keypad to enter. worked like a charm.

I'd have used the keypad to lock it but didn't know the "lock" code off the top of my head.
 
I understand your hesitation in locking the car with it running. Here is an idea fo r your test. Why don't you bring your spare key with you while you test it out?
