I am brand new to this site. Looks to be a great place to learn about a LS, and that is what I am looking for.
I have 2 Grand Marquis. 4.6 drivlines. Love the cars, but two is too much for my garage. So I am thinking of an LS as a fine ride in a smaller package.
After reading thriugh the posts last night I have some concerns.
Timing chains going south after 75,000 miles on the V8? I am used to the 4.6 going over 300,000 with no problems (As long as you change the oil.)
Transmission problems? Valve bodies and selinoide? Expensive!
Coils going bad? The 4.6 has the same type of coil/plug setup (I don't know if it is the same part numbers) and I know of no big deal about them.
(All this experience is based on the 4.6 drivline used in Town Car Limo conversions. They run 24/7 out of O,hare. The trans go bad at about 100,000 but that is because they are not beefed up and the cars are
overweight. The bands wear out. I consider the 4.6 engine to be bullet proof.)
I am asking if there are years and models I should stay away from when I shop. Have these things been FoMoCo fixed over the years, or are the newer cars having the same problems? Are there recalls/ updates I should check for in the cars history? Freebies or will they cost me?
The V8 is a whole lot more common, but I am past my hotrodding years.
If the V6 is more reliable, I am sure it will get me around just fine. What is the concensus on it? Does it use the same trans with the same problems? I would not mind 3 pedals, but it would confuse the wife. (Maybe that is a good thing?)
Thanks for any advice!
