I just bought a '93 Mark VIII with lost keys so first thing is to get some. Can't I just buy an ignition lock cylinder w/keys and change it out?

You can, but you will not have door keys. There is always the keypad, unless the battery dies. Sometimes its just easier to take title to the dealer and have them make them.

Ford only goes 10 yrs. back on keeping key codes.

a competent lock smith should be able to make a matching set of keys for your ignition and doors.

How do you remove the ignition lock cylinder without a key to swap it out with another one?

there are a few ways.
usually involving lock picks, slide hammers, drill bits, etc.
thieves have stealing old fords down to a science.

hit up google and look around. ford truck websites are usually the best when it comes to locks and stuff. no idea why. probably because there are millions of them and they get abused.
a 93 VIII will have the same style ignition cylinder as a mid 90s ford truck too, so most of the info is good.

hey thanks for the help.

basic questions for those with a '93 mark viii. isn't this just a key and not a IC chip? so all i would need is to have the key made by a locksmith?

Yes, 93 is a regular non chipped/RFID/PATS key. That started in 1997 for the Mark VIII.

I tried drilling out a 97 ignition lock cylinder (to get the surrounding trim piece) and I followed all details I could find, and it was tough and no way I could get it out. I know that the 93 is in the column, and likely slightly different, but I wouldn't want to do it on a car that wasn't a throw away.

The 92-96 F150 and 93-96 Mark VIII have essentially the exact same ignition lock cylinder design. They are even removed the same way. Look up any info people have on F150s and it should apply. F150 info is infinitely easier to come by, they only made about 3 billion more F150/F250/Broncos than they did Mark VIIIs

All you need to do is go to a dealer with your title or call a competent locksmith.

Just a quick question why did you buy a car that you could not drive or even hear run?

Because I flip them as a hobby and all I paid for it was another car in my inventory. Plus I don't need to hear them, they get fixed and work again so idc if they don't run.

And that's not correct. Dealers do not make keys for cars older than 10 yrs. And locksmiths cost $$$ where I live. I did this with a Z-car before and it wasn't necessary after all. It's a similar setup to these.

Thanks I'll research this.
