A gentleman I spoke with picked up a 98 Mark Viii from an auction but the problem is it came with no keys. He's having heck of a hard time trying to get keys made....Is it possible to get keys made w/o a working key at all to get the car to start?

Even if you had lock smith make keys you would then need keys programmed to the car computer.(dealer) That year car has PATS theft system. If comes down to it I have car I could pull all parts for you.

even buying new ignition keys means you still must have them programmed. you will also NEED 2 keys to program them.

going to ford with the VIN may or may not work. its worth a shot to see if they still have the key code in the lookup. if not you will have to have a locksmith make you 2 keys. they can also usually program them for you.

fwiw, on a gen 1 at least, if I needed the lock cylinder I'd buy from the dealer for ~$30 (I priced this out last week) rather than some knock-off made by whomever on ebay...

Totally different - as Right On The Mark said earlier in this thread, a Gen2 has the ignition lock in the dash and it's nothing like a column lock cylinder.

Unfortunately you won't be able to get the key code from a dealer since that information only goes back about 10 years. A locksmith or swapping out everything for a used lock set will be the only way to do this. Also when you go to have it programmed you will be charged 1 hour of labor so be prepared for that or if you know someone with a Ford scanner it can be done at home. Good luck!
