So it’s that time of year again, the Christmas music is playing on the radio, it’s getting colder outside, stores have had all their Christmas items on the shelves for a couple weeks now and The Salvation Army has their bell ringers out at the entrances of every shopping center imaginable.
Like so many others, I groan and think to myself about how annoying those darn bell ringers are when walking by them on my way into the store to buy this and that. Yesterday for instance, I got off work and had to run to the grocery store to pick up a single item for dinner. I get out of my car and the first thing I hear is that little annoying bell and sure enough, there he is right in front of the entrance ringing his little bell with his little hanging bucket. Of course, I walk right on past him, with my head down, and into the store.
But you know, I got to thinking, I’m walking into this grocery store to buy a single bag of french fries so that we can have a complete meal for dinner. How many people in our country don’t have this luxury at the moment because of company cut-backs and layoffs, because of the over-all poverty in our economy right now?
It really started to kind of eat at me, why am I so selfish, that I can’t even give a little money to help make someone’s holiday season a little bit brighter. So that on Christmas morning a child can have a smile on their face because they have a present waiting on them. So on the way out, I dropped a five dollar bill in that bucket and walked away feeling a little better about myself and held my head a little higher.
Our economy is where it is today, because of the overall selfishness and greediness of our country. We as a people have lost focus on what is truly important. Helping out our fellow man and not asking for anything in return. For so long it’s all been about making or saving and extra buck and not worry about who we hurt in the process.
I’m not rich, but I’d consider myself wealthy. But I really don’t ask for much, I can afford to pay my bills, put food on the table and put clothes on my back. What more do I really need?
Yeah our economy is in the crapper right now and most of us are being indirectly affected, if not directly affected by it. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t afford a few bucks to help out somebody else.
Now I know, I’m sounding like one of those television infomercials, “for only a few pennies a day” but it’s not like that, I don’t have any kind of figures on how many people my five dollars will bring happiness to this holiday season. Honestly, if only one person has a smile on their face because of my single donation, then it was all worth it.
So guys and gals, I went onto the Salvation Army’s website and I started my own virtual red kettle and set my goal at $250. So this is where I ask for your help, $250 dollars should be easy for us to raise. I understand times are tight and so is money but give what you can. To donate click here. It lets you choose if you want to donate to my Salvation Army, to your local one, or you can donate to any by entering a zip code. Also, when you donate online, you get a receipt back, donations are tax deductible.
If you don’t feel like donating, then go to the store and donate there, or go to the toy store and have each one of your children pick out a single toy and drop it off with your local charity group, but explain to them the purpose of the gift so that they can understand what it is they’re doing.
So it’s as simple as that, it’s not that hard to bring happiness to a person, it’s sometimes just as simple as lending a helping hand without asking for anything in return.
Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all!
God Bless and Thank You!
