Hello All!!!!!!!! I have a 95 mark VIII with 60,000 miles and its now at the point it needs brakes. I got the FOMOCO OEM pads for it and am going to tackle the job myself....now for the questions...I never did rear brakes on a lincoln. What do I have to do to compress the rear discs?? Does it just push on like front or screw on? Do I need any special tools to compress it? Do I have to do anything special with the emergency brake? Does anyone know a step by step method? Thanks a bunch!!!!

The Rears Screw in...

You can do it with a needle nose pliers, but I bought the tools..

It's not a hard job.... Tool can be picked up at most auto parts stores.. there are the cheaper version for around $50 and the more expensive version for a lot more..

Because I don't use them often I went the cheap route.

Yup....
also, many auto stores, like Autozone, will "lend" the tool for you. I paid $40, and had I returned the part, I would have been refunded that full amount.

It's just not worth doing without the tool. And not the like cube looking thing that goes on the rachet. That's like six bucks and not worth the headache. Just borrow the real tool, it's worth an extra trip to the parts store.

I am doing the rear brakes on my conti but can't get it to compress. I tried the C clamps but it would not compress them???? what is this "Screw in"
and if i need the tool, what is it called?

Just go to autozone or a parts store that will loan you tools and tell them you need a tool to screw the rear pistons back into the caliber. The piston spins back in as its threaded on the back side and doesnt just push in.

I remember that day also.... then I asked... what isn't the caliper depressing... You have to screw it in... Oh oh.... that would explain it...:shifty: Hmmm how could I delete this post was the next thought. :p

Well no damage was done... just my ego.... Then again I'm still a rookie..

thanks guys, I was about to pay $149 dollars for brakes but hopefully this will work.

Make sure you get your rotors turned or get new ones. This is one thing that many overlook (including myself when I didnt know better). If you dont turn your rotors youre just going to waste another set of pads. A lot of parts stores will turn rotors, it should cost 10/each or less.

just ask for a ford rear break tool , them them the year of the car .... try to get the one that fits on a rachit (sp?) like a socket

stay away from the one that looks like a box that works for ford and gm ..... its junk.

The brake cube type of tool worked fine for me... $5 and I can do the brakes on my Mark and my ETC..

Make sure when you put the rear brakes back together that you have the little nipple things on the pistion lined up with the rotor. I made that mistake and it caused my rear brakes to get very hot.

I just did mine on my continental. I rented the brake kit from auto advance for 99 dollars(just as a deposit). I had to buy new rotors because my other ones were worn out. my total came out to be about 77 vs 149 i was going to pay.

Trust me working at a dealership i see how much money you save yourself working on your own stuff. For my lincoln i think i woulda had to sink 20,000 into it instead of the 3k i did lol.
