What oil filters do you guys use on your cars??? Do you use a small diameter filter, just the diameter of the rubber o-ring???

Thanks, Vic

Motorcraft 820s is all I use. No complaints. Anything bigger and you wouldn't be able to maneuver it through the maze.

Iirc, the good Puralator are the same as the mc's. Just don't use frams.

motorcraft fl820s here.
i change it when the message center tells me too.
must not be a problem, because the car has nearly 200k miles.

puralator high mileage filter with no problems....and 6 quarts of 10/30 weight semi synthetic is what im using right now.

oil filter.jpgI picked up these syn filters. Time will tell. Changing the filter on a gen 1 is a pita compared to a gen 2. Been doing my gen 1 every 3000 miles for 14 years.

I always make a little form fitting foil funnel to keep the oil from getting everywhere when taking it off

Started doing that last year after I changed my adapter gasket and sensor. Much cleaner down there now. :)

I've been using the Motorcraft FL820S since I got my first Mark VIII in 2001. But I was recently informed that the Motorcraft FL500 (late model Mustang filter) will fit and it's a much smaller diameter and much easier to maneuver in and out of the tight spaces under the car. But the threads and O-ring are exactly the same size as the FL820S. I haven't tried it yet because it's not time to change it yet. But I think I will try it. If anyone else has tried this one, I'd like to know how it works.

Its the same thread
And close enough gasket to work
I just couldn't do it its so small I don't know enough about oil flow to trust it

Its also not hard to change anyways

Changing the oil on these cars really isn't that bad..I was already used to doing it with my 97 bird..once you do it a few times its easy as pie, just angle the filter in a few directions and it comes right out..so what if it leaves a little oil on the k member..just wipe it off with a rag afterward..hey if there's a little oil there at least it won't rust :/

I was tempted to post pretty much the same thing earlier but I was worried it might come off like I was downplaying how hard the job is. The truth is I have no problem at all changing the oil on my Mark. It takes the same time as any other vehicle and in some cases less. I use a stock Motorcraft filter that is short, but even if it were bigger it wouldn't matter because the technique to remove it is the same. Like you said, the oil wipes off. In fact, it loosens grime and dirt and helps to clean the K-frame.

I agree it's not overly difficult to change the oil. It's just messy because when you turn the filter around and angle it to get it out, it pours oil everywhere. To me, that's irritating as all kinds of hell. I'm going to try the FL500 to see if I can get it in and out without spilling oil all over myself and everything within a 10 mile radius of the car :D
