Maybe you adjusted the timing when you changed out the cap/rotor. ?

Take a plug out of the head, lay it against the head or valve cover so it grounds out.. and with the spark plug wire on, crank it over. Have someone look to see if it sparks at all. If it doesn't.. it must be your coil, cap, or rotor. If you have spark, either your timings whack .. or you're not getting fuel. It's that easy.

Also, did you gap your plugs??. Even if you didn't.. it should still sputter.

If your timing was out at first, and you corrected it.. then your plugs could be fowled already. Try cleaning them, recheck your timing, make sure you have fuel in your tank, and try it again.

on my 88 marquis sometimes it would cut out like somone turned the key off. turned out to be my ign module. thats what i would guess. i believe it comes off with a torx bit.

It's not quite "that easy." If you're getting intermittant spark it will be either a coil or ignition control module on it's way out or improperly connected. I'd pull the dist. apart and reconnect everything.

I saw 351 and didn't catch that it's a '96. I assumed it was a carb'd setup. And I didnt' know ford still used the 351 that late.
