Mark VIII valve cover removal

can some of you knowledgeable guys post detailed instuctions on removal of the valve covers i want to paint em and put em back on, what part #'s and all,what else should i do or replace while they are off, i'll post in the tech section when i do it , thanks! :feedback
 
ok... I'm just going to give you fair warning... it's a royal pain in the a$$.

I had to remove my covers to replace the gaskets (which is around 100.00 if memory serves me) from when I blew a spark plug out of the head. It's also not very easy to install.

just a list of some things I remember off the top of my head that have to be done to do this:
remove the hood
remove the cowl
remove the wiper assembly
remove the intake tube
remove the battery
remove/move alot of misc vacuume lines
remove IMRC bracket
remove/move the fuse box
remove/move the coolant tank out of the way
cut the tape hodling the wiring harness for the injectors so you can move them
lots of misc harnesses/clips laying on top on the engine
and it would probably help ALOT if you removed the brake booster assembly as that AND the lines get in the way of removing and installing the valve cover.

oh, the oil dipstick also gets in the way too... you'll want to find a way to either hold it back with something or have an extra set of hands to help ya while removing/installing it.

Someone here (I think) told me that if you jack up the engine to get it to twist that it makes this process a little easier.

good luck... I was wanting to do the same thing when I had mine off... but after removing it, I knew it wasnt going back on without getting all scratched up... so I didn't bother :(

yeah didnt realize all the trouble for valve covers.....guess i'll leave them be :Bang :Bang

You don't have to remove 'em to paint 'em.

The passenger side is not near as bad as the driver's side can be. I only needed to remove the fuel rail to get the fuel regulator out of the way, pull the plug wires of course, remove the intake tube and the ignition coil bracket.

Ask Ray 'bout the driver's side. :Bang

Why? I have done both sides in 2 hours. Not that involved at all. I mean it sucks but its not terrible.

It gives ya more room to work. The cam cover sits back pretty far under them... it makes it alot easier. Sitting under the hood hunched over isn't very good on the back either
 
WOW! that sounds like lots of work. Makes me miss my Mustang with the wing nuts holding the valve covers on.... Now I'm sad....

it isnt nearly as bad as all that it could never be. open you hood and tak a look around ans se what there or not and take your time.

it really isnt that bad.... just time consuming removing everything and reinstalling it. (plus you need beer time :D)

Like I said, if you were to remove the brake booster assembly... it would make the job 1000X easier. There would be no interference issues.

without doing it (atleast in my case) you have to really turn and twist the cam cover into position to get it back on (VERY tricky)... which usually knocked the gasket off of it.
