I'm doing a Mercon 5 swap on a 96 Mark which currently has Mercon 3 in it. How many quarts of Mercon 5 should I get? I have heard anywhere from 11-13 quarts? I won't be switching the filter, my friend works at Ford and has access to the machine which sucks up all the old fluid without having to drop the pan. This car has actually recently been serviced about 10k miles ago with this Mercon 3 and new filter but I want it to shift smoother...

You should change the filter out. Not like it is that big of an expense.....

Technically you will need 12 quarts, but I would get 14 just to be on the safe side. There is supposed to be 6 quarts for the tranny and 6 for the torque convertor......when I changed out my fluid and did the Baumann shift kit I drained as much as I could and I was able to get about 12 quarts in mine before it was full.

Change the filter! Swapping leaves old $hit in your converter and pan...
