I hear everyone say that mercon V fluid is totally necessary in the mark VIII transmission. I have a 95 with 55K miles on it. I just had it flushed at jiffy lube( I know probably a mistake but it was only 90 bucks). I also just dropped the pan and changed the filter myself. When jiffy did the flush they used a penzoil multi-vehicle. Its a universal synthetic that is supposed to be equivilent to mercon V. When i did the filter i used the same thing to fill it. would this type of fluid cause any problems to a bone stock 95? p.s. I did all this to try and save my converter that is shuddering only around 35-40 mph under slow acceleration. No luck yet. Just hoping the fluid isn't causing any problems before i have a new converter put in for $600

It might just be the fluid, I just got a flush they droped the pan flushed the converter and everything. had the same 35 45 shudder and fixed it no probs shifts great. Now when u sent it to jiffy lube did they just drain the fluid and run new fluid in it. In order to fix the shudder and save yourself 600 pucks have it done right and have that converter flushed the right way I really wouldent be suprised if they just gave u some new fluid places like that are very questionable there like the Mcdonalds of auto service, lol. The fluid u need is true mercon v non of the will work for crap go with the real good synthetic stuff to. Good luck.

What comes stock, isn't it mercon. I have 93k on mine, I am not sure when it was last serviced. It looks reasonably clean.

Ford TSB requires Mercon V. It is less likely to breakdown under high temps, than Mercon III. The also recommend for cars that are in stop and go traffic most of the time, or any car in the south to install a trans cooler. There is a ford part number for the cooler and installation kit. Draining the cooler lines and converter is part of the instructions, because old fluid from the cooler lines could contaminate the new fluid and still cause your shudder. By the way, ford says that converter shudder happens above 35mph during the 3/4 or 4/3 shift. Anything else is not converter shudder.

Probably, Says Mercon fluid only on the dipstick,lol.. When I had a flush I was told use mercon v i know the guy who did the work hes friends of the family and told me what mercon v is a mix of and what not. He says theres to ways u can do the fluids straight mercon v or a lower mercon with the additive that makes it mercon v exactly what they do to make mercon v its not like mercon v comes from the ground and into a bottle, lol. Benefits to doing the mix, its like 30 bucks cheaper when i got my flush i did it no probs, he did it to his mark few years back no probs.
