Need some help. My gas tank is rotting away. It's to the point where it smells like gas all around the car. I've done a little research so far, and apparently it is illegal to ship a gas tank. (at least a used one). I don't want to get a local one as it will already be rusty (I live in NJ). A new one, if I can find one, is way too much money.

I've found a couple on car-part.com, but they will not ship them.

Any suggestions?

Ken

take a ride and go pick one up. I know there are a couple good 98's in the junk yards around me. (Norther Virginia)

call Brandywine used auto parts I bet you anything they have one, and there located in MD.

never mind, advanced doesn't have them for second gens.

I'm having a NJ yard pull one for me for $90. I told them I don't want it if it is rusty. They'll check it out before they pull it, but he thinks its good. We'll see.

Gotta get a new gas tank strap and might as well do the fuel pump too :(

Ken

yes, if you pull the gas tank, you might as well do a fuel pump.

might also want to do U-joints while you have the gas tank out of the way. maybe put in a 93 drive shaft :p

i would get the gas tank coated to prevent it from rusting out again.

I have gas tank from a 98 sitting in my back yard. Not rotten or rusty.

Um I might b interested if price is right
Sum jack leg mashed mine in way before I owned her
I run outa gas just under the 1/4 mark.
Think It would work on a 97 ?

Are you sure that it's the tank itself, and not just the emissions hoses?

Damn rust bucket.

The tank has a real bad rot spot and a stain around the rot spot. The gas smell seems to come right from the spot. I'll try and get a pic of it. :(

Of course they don't make the gas tank strap(s) for our cars anymore? Any ideas for this? I will ask the yard pulling the tank for me to keep and sell me the strap(s) too, but I really wanted new ones. :(

Also, where is the best/cheapest place to order a walbro fuel pump? I guess I'll just get the 190 pump??

Also, once you get another tank, I've used this paint in the past:

Thanks Doug!! I ordered the fuel pump and the tank spray just now. I'm picking up the tank (and hopefully some better tank straps) tomorrow. Are there any other parts I need? My current fuel pump is working, I'm just replacing it because the tank will be out and it is the original. My local mechanic is going to do this job, I may bring it to you if that doesn't work out. :) - Ken

No they dont interchange
I know the fuel filler neck is different im not sure if that is the only thing though.

They absolutely do, I've done it.

The only difference is in the emissions hoses, the bare tank itself is exactly the same. ;)

The first pic is a '98 tank. The second is a '97 tank (after I swapped over the emission lines). The third pic is the '97 tank installed in a '98 LSC.

You're welcome, just let me know.

Now I need gas tank straps :( The yard giving me the tank said his are no good, and I'm sure mine are no good. What are my options if these aren't available anymore??

Does any aftermarket have them?

Ken

The pics above are the '98 lines. I don't have pics of the '97 lines.

I do know that the junction (circled in red) is different between the years and there is another hose on the '97 setup.
