Need a little help with some codes

Fighting with my wife's 98 & got a couple codes i could use some assist with. Autozone gave me a printout of p0500 for VSS sensor "A". I see there are 2 sensors on the trans, the one on the tailhousing & the one halfway along the case, which is considered "A" or is that somewhere else entirely?

2. I picked up my own handheld scanner this weekend & while muddling through a KOER test it gave me a P1703 for brake switch out of test range. What's the most likely issue on these cars for that one to pop up?

You get that response if you don't press the brake pedal at the right time during the test.

ok that's a relief, i probably just missed the window...if it even warned me when to do it in the 1st place. It's not the nicest scanner in the 1st place.
